Frankincense may fight some cancers
ROANOKE, Va., Jan. 31 - A Virginia Tech scientist says frankincense oil might be useful in treating malignant melanoma -- an aggressive cancer that attacks humans and equines.
...Frankincense is a botanical oil distillate made from fermented plants that contains boswellic acid, a component known to have anti-neoplastic properties.
During a recent presentation before a regional meeting of the American Cancer Society in Roanoke, Va., Robertson -- director of the college's Center for Comparative Oncology -- said he's found the oil has fairly selective anti-tumor activity and doesn't appear to disrupt normal cells...

If you'll recall that back in December there were many articles lamenting the fact that Hollywood was having one of it's worst years ever at the box office (Now they want to pat themselves on the back and tell each other how courageous they are...). Here's the reason why in my opinion:
Plenty of political action at Oscars this year Hollywood has always worn its liberal politics on its sleeve...with Tuesday's crop of Oscar contenders, though, politics have never been more front and center.
...The films got made because several powerful filmmakers and stars were able to push their passionate points of view onto the big screen, regardless of the commerciality of their cinematic purpose...
..."Capote," "Transamerica" and "Brokeback Mountain" raise political issues of another kind: sexual identity.
...What remains to be seen is how the world -- and the bits of red state America between the coasts -- will respond to what is sure to be one of the bluest Oscarcasts in recent memory...
..."These films aren't liberal films," said Haggis. "Since when is freedom of speech and the independence of the fourth estate a liberal issue? All these films are truly American. They're not taking one stand or another. They're asking questions, not painting billboards." (yeah, and I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you...)

Personally I'd think best picture would have an awful lot to do with how many people went to see it but apparently it does not. Here are the flicks nominated for Best Movie and how much each made:
Crash" $55 million "Brokeback Mountain" $51 million "Munich" $41 million "Goodnight, and Good Luck" $25 million "Capote" $15 million
Now here's the movies that made the most money and were not nominated:
"Star Wars," $380 million
"Harry Potter," $286 million
"Narnia," $278 million
"War of the Worlds," $234 million
"King Kong," $213 million.
It would seem that in Hollywood the best picture has more to do with "making a statement" than "entertainment"...
Some US troops question Woodruff coverage
Jan. 31 - The American media stood up and took notice when an improvised explosive device grievously injured an ABC News crew Sunday.
In Iraq, and throughout the military, there is sympathy and concern for anchor Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt, but there is also this question:
"Why do you think this is such a huge story?" wrote an officer stationed in Baqubah, Iraq, Monday via e-mail. "It's a bit stunning to us over here how absolutely dominant the story is on every network and front page. I mean, you'd think we lost the entire 1st Marine Division or something.
"There's a lot of grumbling from guys at all ranks about it. That's a really impolite and impolitic thing to say ... but it's what you would hear over here."
..."The point that is currently being made (is that) that press folks are more important than mere military folks," a senior military officer told UPI Tuesday.
...Military personnel often express frustration that the media harps on military casualty reports at the expense of what they consider their successes in Iraq...

NOW President Cussin' Mad Over Alito Confirmation
Feb. 1, 2006- National Organization for Women president Kim Gandy was so angry on Tuesday after the Senate confirmed Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito that she began cursing during a radio interview.
"That is such B - llsh - t!" Gandy exclaimed, after radio host Steve Malzberg argued that Alito was nowhere near as politically extreme as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who once favored lowering the age of consent for women to 12.
The staff at WOR Radio bleeped Gandy's swearword and Malzberg promptly warned her, "Hey, hey, hey - you can't say that on the air . . . I suggest that you control yourself - we're on the public airwaves."
Souding surprised at the reprimand, the N.O.W. chief responded: "Excuse me - that's a curseword?"
Gandy's R-rated outburst came during the following exchange:
MALZBERG: You don't see it as a president's right to have a Supreme Court nominee given an up or down vote?
GANDY: Oh, absolutely.
MALZBERG: So when you saw Ruth Bader Ginsburg come out for the age of consent to be lowered to 12 for legalized . . .
GANDY: Oh, that's - that is such B - llsh - t!
MALZBERG: Hey, hey, hey, hey. You can't say that on the air. That is not - that's absolutely . . .
GANDY: That is not . . .
...MALZBERG: [She favored] legalized prostitution, lowering the age of consent. And yet she was overwhelmingly confirmed with about 96 votes.
...MALZBERG: Well, we have a basic fundamental disagreement but I'm able to control myself and not curse at you.
GANDY: What, are you - you're saying - excuse me, that's a curseword? I - ah - well, ha, ha, ha, ha. That's amazing.
MALZBERG: Well, yeah, you're not allowed to say that on the airwaves. Surprise, surprise. I thought someone who's been on as many programs as you probably [would] understand that. But now you know and you'll probably never say that word again...
