Soldier returns from Iraq to surprise: Restored collectible car
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - An Indiana National Guard soldier who spent a year in Iraq returned home to a big surprise: In his absence, his friends had transformed his rusted 1967 Plymouth Barracuda into a deep blue, chrome-trimmed car lover's dream.
Spc. Bob Metcalf, who had stored the rusted, hoodless, fenderless Barracuda in his brother's garage, left for Iraq last year. He had planned to someday fix up the old muscle car.
Friends of the 39-year-old reservist kept their restoration work secret until Friday night. That's when Metcalf wandered into South Bend's Joyce Center to see the Cavalcade of Wheels auto show with his pals.
Metcalf, who returned recently from Iraq, was incredulous when his friends told him that the gleaming deep blue car with red and white stripes sitting under a spotlight was his old car sporting a new look.
...Metcalf's friends and family had waited a long time to see him sitting in his polished car. Dozens of volunteers had endured six months of busted knuckles, grease and sweat to finish a project they called "one soldier's dream."
Metcalf, a veteran of more than 20 years in the service, had shipped out to Mosul, Iraq, last year for what was originally supposed to be two years in Iraq, but was later cut to one...

I 'll bet there is no outrage in the press over this like there was last week when the man shot and killed a teenager for walking on his lawn (and harassing him). I haven't seen this on the front page of a single paper or on CNN... why? Because a gun wasn't used...

Afghan Court Drops Case Against Christian
An Afghan court on Sunday dismissed a case against a man who converted from Islam to Christianity because of a lack of evidence and he will be released soon, officials said.
The announcement came as U.S.-backed President Hamid Karzai faced mounting foreign pressure to free Abdul Rahman, a move that risked angering Muslim clerics who have called for him to be killed.
An official closely involved with the case told The Associated Press that it had been returned to the prosecutors for more investigation, but that in the meantime, Rahman would be released.
...Abdul Wakil Omeri, a spokesman for the Supreme Court, confirmed that the case had been dismissed because of "problems with the prosecutors' evidence."
He said several family members of Rahman have testified that he has mental problems.
...Gen. Shahmir Amirpur, who is in charge of Policharki...said Rahman had also been begging his guards to provide him with a Bible...

Clinton chauffeur an illegal immigrant
NEWARK, N.J., March 27 (UPI) -- An embarrassing hole in security surrounding former U.S. President Bill Clinton turned up when one of his chauffeurs was found to be a wanted man.
Shahzad Qureshi, 42, was in one of three cars awaiting Clinton at Newark Airport last week when a Port Authority policeman happened to check license plate numbers.
The computer came back showing the Pakistani national had skipped a residency-status hearing in 2000, and a deportation order had been issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the New York Post reported…

9/11 Commish Bob Kerrey: News Docs Show Saddam a Threat
March 25, 2006- A bombshell Iraqi intelligence document detailing a 1995 pact between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden to conduct "joint operations" against the U.S. proves that Saddam Hussein "would collaborate with people who would do our country harm," former 9/11 Commission member, Bob Kerrey said Friday.
"This is a very significant set of facts," Kerrey told the New York Sun.
"I personally and strongly believe you don't have to prove that Iraq was collaborating against Osama bin Laden on the September 11 attacks to prove he was an enemy [of the U.S.] and that he would collaborate with people who would do our country harm," the Nebraska Democrat explained.
While Kerrey cautioned that the 1995 pact doesn't implicate Saddam directly in the 9/11 attacks, he contended: "It does tie him into a circle that meant to damage the United States."
"Saddam was a significant enemy of the United States," Kerrey said, adding that the relationship between the Iraqi dictator and the al Qaida chief would become clearer as more materials from the former regime get translated and analyzed.
The newly released Iraqi intelligence document - first reported by the Weekly Standard last Sunday - details a February 19, 1995 meeting between an official representative of Iraq and Osama bin Laden, who is said to have requested Iraq's help with "carrying out joint operations against foreign forces" in Saudi Arabia.
At the time, the only foreign forces in Saudi Arabia were U.S. troops.
The document indicates that Saddam was thoroughly briefed on the bin Laden meeting and signed off on efforts to "invigorate" his government's relationship with the al Qaida chief.
Eight months after the meeting, in Nov. 1995, five U.S. military advisors were killed in an al Qaida attack against a Saudi national guard installation in Riyadh. Seven months after the Riyadh attack, al Qaida killed 19 U.S. airmen in the Khobar Towers barracks bombing.
Contrary to what the "joint operations" document seems to indicate, in 2004 the 9/11 Commission concluded that Saddam and bin Laden had no "collaborative, operational relationship."

Constitutional Lawyer Hopes Congress Bars SCOTUS From Citing Foreign Law
March 27, 2006- (AgapePress) - An attorney with the American Family Association Center for Law & Policy (AFA Law Center) says he is disturbed over one Supreme Court Justice's recent comments regarding those who want to prohibit the citation of foreign law in the high court's constitutional rulings.
Last month, Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg addressed an audience at the Constitutional Court of South Africa. During her speech, the 73-year-old justice blasted Republican-proposed House and Senate measures that would either criticize or bar the citing of foreign law in Supreme Court decisions.
Steve Crampton, chief counsel with the AFA Law Center, feels Justice Ginsburg's comments are typical of activist judges. In fact, he says, "I think Justice Ginsburg is showing us why activist judges become activist in the first place. They simply see no limitations on the scope of their authority once they're placed on the bench."
Activist judges frequently step outside constitutional boundaries when issuing rulings, Crampton contends. He feels steps need to be taken to curb judges who routinely try to exceed the power and jurisdiction of the courts.
"What you're talking about is ultimate authority in our society," the pro-family lawyer asserts. "The question that American citizens must decide is who, ultimately, is going to govern us? Are we going to have unelected judges decide for us, in particular, the moral issues, the policy issues that are going to affect every life?"
Or, on the other hand, will Americans follow the guide that the framers of the Constitution provided, Crampton wants to know. That is, he asks, "are we going to retain the system that the founders erected and place that ultimate authority in the hands not of the judiciary but of the legislature?"
Many are unhappy with the Supreme Court's use of foreign laws in recent rulings, such as those striking down the juvenile death penalty and laws against sodomy. In light of such rulings, Crampton says a move by Congress to bar the citation of other nations' laws in U.S. high court decisions is long overdue.
