How old is my dog/cat?

According to this vet site it's not true that multiplying your dog's age by seven will produce its equivalent in human years.

The first year of a pet's life is roughly equivalent to about the first fifteen years for a human and two pet years are equal to about twenty-four human years. After that, each year for a pet is equivalent to four years.

Dog Human

1 year 15 years
2 years 24 years
4 years 32 years
7 years 45 years
10 years 56 years
15 years 76 years
20 years 98 years

(actually for dogs it's very weight dependant, larger/heavier dogs age faster than lighter/smaller see chart in link below)

Cat Human
1 year 15 years
2 years 24 years
5 years 36 years
7 years 45 years
12 years 64 years
15 years 76 years
18 years 88 years
21 years 100 years

Hanukah: Celebrating an oil crisis
The first Hanukah was about a Middle Eastern oil crisis -- not about a shortfall in the desert, a debate over whether to drill in environmentally correct habitats or even about oil found underground.

The oil crisis that led to the celebration of Hanukah was about the oil that grows on trees, olive trees. The oil crisis of 164 B.C., perhaps not unlike the oil crisis of 2006, could only be solved by a miracle... ...more at:

St. Nixed: Store Santas Shunned Over Child Safety Fears
December 21, 2006 London - In a development that would make the Grinch smile, Santa Claus is said to be in danger of disappearing from British homes, stores and streets -- a victim of the fear surrounding child sex abuse.

...Concern about lawsuits has prompted many department stores to ban children from sitting on Santa's knee, touching him or visiting him in the traditional grotto (Santa's workshop).

As a result, report author Josie Appleton said children were learning that Santa is a character to fear -- not the jolly, happy figure of years past... Now you've got a standoffish guy, standing under track lighting."

...The Manifesto Club said the current atmosphere of suspicion and fear also has tainted other customary Christmas activities, including caroling, Nativity plays and bell-ringing. Even at such apparently innocuous events as barbershop quartet concerts, adults are not allowed to be alone with children, the report said...

...Conservative Party lawmaker Tim Loughton's office confirmed Thursday that when the lawmaker volunteered as Santa for a fundraising event in his constituency in southeast England this year, children were forbidden from sitting on his knee.

David Pearson, head of the Churches' Child Protection Advisory Service charity, had a mixed reaction Thursday to the Manifesto Club report.

He said his group works with dozens of faith and community groups each week and believes that concerns over child protection sometimes go too far.

For example, some schools in the country ban parents from photographing and videotaping their children in Nativity plays - a measure he found ridiculous.

At the same time, Pearson said he had come across several instances in which known sex offenders had been hired to play Santa. Community groups were right to be cautious, he added...

School accuses 5-year-old of sex harassment
December 20, 2006 HAGERSTOWN - A kindergarten student was accused earlier this month of sexually harassing a classmate at Lincolnshire Elementary School, an accusation that will remain on his record until he moves to middle school.

Washington County Public Schools spokeswoman Carol Mowen said the definition of sexual harassment used by the school system is, "unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favors and/or other inappropriate verbal, written or physical conduct of a sexual nature directed toward others."

...According to a school document provided by the boy's father, the 5-year-old pinched a girl's buttocks on Dec. 8 in a hallway at the school south of Hagerstown.

Charles Vallance, the boy's father, said he was unable to explain to his son what he had done. "He knows nothing about sex," Vallance said.

"There's no way to explain what he's been written up for. He knows it as playing around. He doesn't know it as anything sexual at all."

The incident was described as "sexual harassment" on the school form.

...Lincolnshire Principal Darlene Teach ...said regardless of grade level,"Anytime a student touches another student inappropriately, it could be sexual harassment."

School administrators at a Texas school in November suspended a 4-year-old student for inappropriately touching a teacher's aide after the prekindergarten student hugged the woman...

...The incident will be included in the boy's file while he remains at Lincolnshire, but Mowen said those files do not follow students when they move on to middle school... (then why bother?) http://www.herald-mail.com/?module=displaystory&story_id=154557&format=print

Report: Robots will have rights
...Far from being extracts from the extreme end of science fiction, the idea that we may one day give sentient machines the kind of rights traditionally reserved for humans is raised in a British government-commissioned report which claims to be an extensive look into the future...

..."If we make conscious robots they would want to have rights and they probably should," said Henrik Christensen, director of the Centre of Robotics and Intelligent Machines at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The idea will not surprise science fiction aficionados. It was widely explored by Dr Isaac Asimov, one of the foremost science fiction writers of the 20th century...

...Robots and machines are now classed as inanimate objects without rights or duties but if artificial intelligence becomes ubiquitous, the report argues, there may be calls for humans' rights to be extended to them...

..."If granted full rights, states will be obligated to provide full social benefits to them including income support, housing and possibly robo-healthcare to fix the machines over time," it says.

Robots are honored in Japan (I know, not the same thing…)
Dec 21, TOKYO - A feeding machine and a furry, therapeutic seal — both designed to make life easier for older people — were among robots honored at a government-sponsored robotics award ceremony in Japan on Thursday...

...Robots are seen in Japan as one way to deal with a rapidly aging population and combat an impending labor shortage. The country's population of 127 million is expected to plunge 30 percent by 2055, with those aged 65 or older making up 40 percent of that figure, according to government forecasts released earlier this week...

The Robot Award was set up earlier this year by the Japanese government to promote research and development in the robotics industry. Ten robots won prizes out of a total of 152 entries from across Japan.

Scientists link weight to gut bacteria
Dec 20, WASHINGTON - Maybe it's germs that are making you fat.

Researchers found a strong connection between obesity and the levels of certain types of bacteria in the gut. That could mean that someday there will be novel new ways of treating obesity that go beyond the standard advice of diet and exercise.

According to two studies being published in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature, both obese mice and people had more of one type of bacteria and less of another kind...

...growing evidence of this link gives scientists a potentially new and still distant way of fighting obesity: Change the bacteria in the intestines and stomach. It also may lead to a way of fighting malnutrition in the developing world.

"We are getting more and more evidence to show that obesity isn't what we thought it used to be," said Nikhil Dhurandhar, a professor of infection and obesity at Louisiana State University's Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

"It isn't just (that) you're eating too much and you're lazy."
(Whew!! Boy am I releived... pass the chips, I don't want to get up.)

...People are born germ-free, but within days they have a gut blooming with microbes....

17 yr old Loses Testical [sic] in Turkish Hospital Due to Islamic Shari'a
2006-12-21 -A 17 year old youth was admitted to a hospital with extreme pain and swelling in the groin. When sent for an ultrasound, a veiled woman radiologist Dr. K. Aribag refused to administer the test and told the patient to return the next day. The young man was disappointed for a second time when the second doctor turned out to be another veiled female doctor who also refused to treat him, due to the Islamic ban on touching a man's body. Finally, after the Chief Physician was involved and a male radiologist was found, the young man underwent an emergency surgery, but lost a testical due to the delays.

Charter to subordinate Sharia introduced to European Union
December 20, 2006 WASHINGTON - An initiative challenging Muslim communities living in the West to subordinate their interpretations of Sharia law to the laws of the land has been launched at the European Parliament.

The Muslim Charter, written by Islamic law expert Sam Solomon and sponsored by Gerald Batten, a British member of the European Parliament, is designed to encourage Muslims to state that they reject extremist interpretations of religious texts that promote or excuse violence and bring Islam into conflict with the modern world.

Groups purporting to represent Muslims were encouraged to sign the charter to affirm that they reject violence and discrimination against non-Muslims, value the freedoms of the West and want to live as law-abiding citizens.

The 10-article charter calls on the Muslim community to issue a fatwa prohibiting the use of violence or threats to their followers

Ex-National Security Adviser Berger Hid Archive Documents in 2003 Under Trailer
12/21/06 WASHINGTON - President Clinton's national security adviser removed classified documents from the National Archives, hid them under a construction trailer and later tried to find the trash collector to retrieve them, the agency's internal watchdog said Wednesday...

...Berger took the documents in the fall of 2003 while working to prepare himself and Clinton administration witnesses for testimony to the Sept. 11 commission. Berger was authorized as the Clinton administration's representative to make sure the commission got the correct classified materials.

...Berger pleaded guilty to unlawfully removing and retaining classified documents. He was fined $50,000, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and was barred from access to classified material for three years.

Officials told The Associated Press at the time of the thefts that the documents were highly classified and included critical assessments about the Clinton administration's handling of the millennium terror threats as well as identification of America's terror vulnerabilities at airports and seaports.

...Later, when Berger was confronted by Archives officials about the missing documents, he lied by saying he did not take them, the report said.

...Berger took a break to go outside without an escort while it was dark. He had taken four documents in his pockets.

"He headed toward a construction area. ... Mr. Berger looked up and down the street, up into the windows of the Archives and the DOJ (Department of Justice), and did not see anyone," the interview notes said.

He then slid the documents under a construction trailer, according to the inspector general. Berger acknowledged that he later retrieved the documents from the construction area and returned with them to his office.

"He was aware of the risk he was taking," the inspector general's notes said. Berger then returned to the Archives building without fearing the documents would slip out of his pockets or that staff would notice that his pockets were bulging...

I'm not normally a Trump fan but I like this...
Trump To Rosie: You're Sued!
NEW YORK, NY (December 20, 2006) -- Donald Trump is set to sue "The View" host Rosie O'Donnell, Access Hollywood can reveal.

Earlier this afternoon Trump announced he is filing suit against the TV talk show host. "She says things that come to her mouth, she's not smart, she's crude, she's ignorant and to be honest I look forward to suing Rosie," he told our cameras. "I'm gonna sue her and I look forward to it. She's really very dangerous for the show."

Trump declined to elaborate on the details of his proposed legal filings, but added O'Donnell will understand his reasoning. "Rosie will find out what we're suing her for. She knows what we're suing her for,"

he said adding the lawsuit is already in the works. "It's something I look very forward to," he added...

Liquid coal: A cheaper, cleaner 21st century fuel?

12/17/2006 NEW YORK - …Already the United States Air Force has carried out tests flying a B-52 Stratofortress with a coal-based fuel.

And JetBlue Airways Corp. supports a bill in Congress that would extend tax credits for alternative fuels, pushing technology to produce jet fuel for the equivalent of $40 a barrel -- way below current oil prices.

Major coal mining companies in the United States , which has more coal reserves than Saudi Arabia has oil, are investing in ways to develop fuels derived from carbon.

The technology of producing a liquid fuel from coal or natural gas is hardly new. The Fischer-Tropsch process was developed by German researchers Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch in 1923 and used by Germany and Japan during World War II to produce alternative fuels. Indeed, in 1944, Germany produced 6.5 million tons, or 124,000 barrels a day.

And coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuel is already in use elsewhere, like South Africa , where it meets 30 percent of transportation fuel needs.

In addition to being cheaper than oil, advocates point out that the fuel is environmentally friendlier and would also help America wean itself of foreign oil imports...

..."The program ... is the first step in opening up new horizons for sourcing fuel for military purposes," said Bill Harrison, a fuels expert with the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio .

The flight test was part of the Department of Defense's Assured Fuel Initiative to develop secure domestic sources for the military's energy needs. The Pentagon hopes to reduce its use of crude oil and foreign producers and get about half of its aviation fuel from alternative sources by 2016.

Wind farms 'are failing to generate the predicted amount of electricity'

12/10/2006- The claimed benefits of wind energy are called into question today by a study that finds few wind farms in England and Wales produce as much electricity as the Government has forecast...

...Despite millions being spent on wind turbines, the study by the Renewable Energy Foundation shows that England and Wales are not windy enough to allow large turbines to work at the rates claimed for them.

PARK PC'D BY GRINCHES

December 18, 2006 - - A Westchester grandfather called Briarcliff Manor officials "grinches" yesterday after they not only refused to put up a Nativity scene in a village park - but took down all holiday symbols that were already there.

Henry Ritell, 80, sued the village to force it to install the Nativity scene, which he had purchased, in Law Park , where a menorah and a tree decorated with Christmas lights were standing.

On Friday, a federal judge ruled in his favor.

He instructed the village to either remove the menorah, "a symbol of Jewish faith," or include Ritell's Nativity scene...

[Rather than install the Nativity scene] ...The next day, all holiday symbols, including the tree's lights and star, were removed...

British Stewardess 'banned from taking bible on plane'

12/19/2006 -An air stewardess is claiming religious discrimination against an airline which she says banned her from taking the Bible to Saudi Arabia .

The stewardess has been told by BMI that it is against the law of the insular Middle Eastern country to bring in religious books other than the Koran.

The woman, who is understood to be a committed Christian, takes her bible everywhere she goes and is now set to take the airline to an industrial tribunal claiming discrimination on religious grounds.

BMI, formerly British Midland Airways, said today it was merely following the Foreign Office advice that no non-Islamic materials or artefacts are allowed into the country... (Gee, where is the UN when you need them...)

"She is saying she wants to carry her bible with her. We are saying we can't start designing rules around individuals when we've got several hundred members of staff. To take every personal preference into account would be impossible."

...The case follows that of British Airways worker Nadia Eweida, also committed Christian, whose objection to BA rules which forbade her visibly wearing a cross led to a review by BA of its uniform policy.

Jews attacked 4 times more than Muslims, police say

Dec. 18, 2006 LONDON -- Jewish people are four times more likely to be attacked in Britain because of their religion than Muslims, according to figures compiled by the police.

...Police forces started recording the religion of faith-related hate-crime victims only this year. They did so on the instruction of the Association of Chief Police Officers, which wanted a clear picture of community tensions around the country, following reports of Muslims being attacked after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the July 7 London bombings last year.

However, the first findings, for the July-September period, obtained by the Sunday Telegraph under freedom of information legislation, show that it is Jews who are much more likely to be targeted because of their religion.

Can you say “desensitize”?

New program featuring Arabic signs aims to dispel fears about Muslim community

RICHMOND , Virginia : The small beige signs bearing black Arabic script have been appearing all over town on buses and at colleges.

Are they secret messages from terrorists? one panicked bus rider asked. Should the FBI be contacted? What do they mean?

Actual translation: "Paper or plastic?"

The signs, which below the Arabic script carry English translations and comments that indirectly caution against jumping to conclusions, are part of a campaign by A More Perfect Union, a program of the Virginia Interfaith Center , and are aimed at dispelling some of the public's fears toward the Muslim community…

"As people see Arabic, they immediately make an association with terrorism," said the Rev. C. Douglas Smith, executive director of the Virginia Interfaith Center , a nonpartisan coalition of faith communities that work for change through education and advocacy. " (yeah, and with good reason)

Along with the "paper or plastic" sign, there are two others — one which is the Arabic version of the "I'm a little tea pot" rhyme and the other roughly translating to the English equivalent of "rock, paper, scissors." Accompanying the translations at the bottom of the posters are comments such as, "Misunderstanding can make anything scary," and "What did you think it said?"

...The transit company has already fielded several calls from concerned riders, said Gretchen Schoel, executive director of A More Perfect Union, a program to promote diversity...

"It's so great that we're getting feedback, even if it is negative, because it shows that people are looking, they're thinking," Schoel said. "And it really proves the point that this script right here conjures up certain ideas in our heads that we have to work with."

Bias toward the Muslim community is a continuing problem across the country and in Virginia , said Imad Damaj, president of the Virginia Muslim Coalition for Public Affairs.

"There's so many lazy, unexamined assumptions about all of us and how we react to people," Damaj said. "We need to challenge ourselves."

(So how often has this dude visited Islamic countries and tried to change Muslim attitudes towards Christians and Jews? Christians and Jews are tortured and killed everyday in Middle Eastern countries, change them first and you’ll see the “irrational fear towards Muslims in the US vanish!! )

Schoel said history has proven that Americans can learn to let go of irrational fears toward other cultures.(I guess 9-11 was irrational... When the stated purpose of Islam is to “subdue” then it’s no longer irrational but prudent to be vigilant when we see unusual things in Arabic writing . We don’t need to change, the Muslim community must demonstrate that they are no threat. I see no outrage from the Muslim community when atrocities are committed or the Holocaust denied.

Has this "interfaith" group ever tried to carry their personal Bible in their brief case or luggage into Saudi Arabia? Do they know what happens in Muslim countries when someone converts to Christianity? Have they ever tried to build a church in a Muslim country or run relief efforts that helps people of all faiths? What religion still practices slavery/? The Muslims in the US have nothing to complain about.

I don't hate or dislike Muslim people, Islam is another critter all together and I pray that they'll repent, change their ways and worship the true God, just as the Ninevites did in the days of Jonah. That’s what your efforts should be focused on.

If Muslims want to come to the US to assimilate and to learn to speak and write English that is one thing. If they want to come and not assimilate but change us, that is another thing altogether. Running around acting like Nevell Chamberlain will get you the same result.)

Mystery Surfaces Over Apartment of Kofi Annan

December 19, 2006- As Secretary-General Annan prepares to leave his post at the United Nations, a mystery is surfacing surrounding his apartment on Roosevelt Island, subsidized by New York taxpayers, which is still in use by the family of his brother, Kobina Annan.

The apartment was where Mr. Annan and his wife lived before 1997, when he became secretary-general. The Roosevelt Island home is part of an estate of low-rent state-regulated housing. For years, the Annans saved considerable sums by occupying an apartment meant to help financially strapped low- to moderate-income New York families.

One question Mr. Annan has never addressed is why he and his wife felt comfortable availing themselves of this generous arrangement. Another is how it is that, since Mr. Annan and his wife left that Roosevelt Island apartment 10 years ago to move into the rent-free residence on Sutton Place supplied to the secretary-general, their former low-rent apartment was handed over to be occupied by the family of Mr. Annan's brother.

This kind of apartment, part of a state-regulated housing development program called Mitchell-Lama, is subject to strict eligibility requirements, involving family size and financial ceilings on combined family income. There is also a requirement that the leaseholder make continuous use of the apartment as a primary residence...

Kindergartner Accused Of Knife Threat In Joliet

PLAINFIELD , Ill. The Plainfield School Board will be meeting Monday night to discuss the case of a kindergarten student accused of threatening another student with a penknife at Charles Reed Elementary School in Joliet .

The boy hasn't been in school since the incident occurred nearly two weeks ago. According to state law, he could be expelled for as long as two years, but the board could opt to send him to an alternative school.

Principal Joan Woolwine says that on Dec. 5, the boy brought a small penknife to school, opened the knife and used threatening language to another student while holding the open knife. A third student received a very minor cut from touching the knife blade.

British Lord Stings Senators Rockefeller and Snowe: 'Uphold Free Speech or Resign'

Dec 18 WASHINGTON, -- Lord Monckton, Viscount of Brenchley, has sent an open letter to Senators Rockefeller (D-WV) and Snowe (R-Maine) in response to their recent open letter telling the CEO of ExxonMobil to cease funding climate-skeptic scientists.

Voices on the political left have called for the arrest and prosecution of Global Warming deniers

12/19/2006 …Lord Monckton, former policy adviser to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, writes: "You defy every tenet of democracy when you invite ExxonMobil to deny itself the right to provide information to "senior elected and appointed government officials"; who disagree with your opinion."

In what The Charleston (WV) Daily Mail has called "an intemperate attempt to squelch debate with a hint of political consequences," Senators Rockefeller and Snowe released an open letter dated October 30 to ExxonMobil CEO, Rex Tillerson, insisting he end Exxon's funding of a "climate change denial campaign."

The Senators labeled scientists with whom they disagree as "deniers," a term usually directed at "Holocaust deniers." Some voices on the political left have called for the arrest and prosecution of skeptical scientists. The British Foreign Secretary has said skeptics should be treated like advocates of Islamic terror and must be denied access to the media.

Responds Lord Monckton, "Sceptics and those who have the courage to support them are actually helpful in getting the science right. They do not, as you improperly suggest, "obfuscate"; the issue: they assist in clarifying it by challenging weaknesses in the "consensus" argument and they compel necessary corrections ... "

It isinteresting that those who support current “manmade global warming” call those who support the idea that it is normal for the earth to go through heating and cooling periods “Global Warming Deniers.” Of course they are slyly equating us to “Holocaust Deniers.” Yet they are the same people who on the stem cell debate front refuse to consider the merits and demerits of both embolic and adult stem cell research. They are also the same ones who want to silence all but evolutionary supported science at the exclusion of Intelligent Design and Creation science.

Italian village basks in winter sunlight thanks to giant mirror

Dec 17 ITALY- Sun-deprived humans might consider moving to the northern Italian village of Viganella , basking in sunlight thanks to a giant mirror.

"I've waited for this moment for seven years," when an architect friend began pondering solutions for the sun-challenged hamlet nestled in the Ossola valley, mayor Pierfranco Midali said in remarks carried by Italy's ANSA news agency.

The village's 185 residents are plunged in chilly darkness during winter months as surrounding mountains cut off direct sunlight.

The answer: A towering eight-by-five meter (26-by-16 feet) mirror installed on the flank of one bluff and computer-driven to follow the sun's path and cast its rays back on Viganella.

"It wasn't easy, we had to find the proper material, learn abut the technology and especially find the money," mayor Midali said of the nearly 100,000-euro (131,000-dollar) operation which has spawned envy from Swiss and other Italian mountain villages.

The mother of all surprises, Iraq 's economy is growing strong, even booming in places.

Newsweek International- Dec. 25, 2006 - Jan. 1, 2007 issue - Civil war or not, Iraq has an economy, and-mother of all surprises-it's doing remarkably well. Real estate is booming. Construction, retail and wholesale trade sectors are healthy, too, according to a report by Global Insight in London . The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports 34,000 registered companies in Iraq , up from 8,000 three years ago. Sales of secondhand cars, televisions and mobile phones have all risen sharply.

Estimates vary, but one from Global Insight puts GDP growth at 17 percent last year and projects 13 percent for 2006. The World Bank has it lower: at 4 percent this year. But, given all the attention paid to deteriorating security, the startling fact is that Iraq is growing at all...

...there's a vibrancy at the grass roots that is invisible in most international coverage of Iraq . Partly it's the trickle-down effect.

However it's spent, whether on security or something else, money circulates. Nor are ordinary Iraqis themselves short on cash. After so many years of living under sanctions, with little to consume, many built up considerable nest eggs-which they are now spending. That's boosted economic activity, particularly in retail. Imported goods have grown increasingly affordable, thanks to the elimination of tariffs and trade barriers. Salaries have gone up more than 100 percent since the fall of Saddam, and income-tax cuts (from 45 percent to just 15 percent) have put more cash in Iraqi pockets. "The U.S. wanted to create the conditions in which small-scale private enterprise could blossom," says Jan Randolph, head of sovereign risk at Global Insight. "In a sense, they've succeeded."

Christmas trees being returned to SeaTac airport

SEATAC, Wash. (AP) — Christmas trees are going back up at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

...Davis added that the rabbi "never asked us to remove the trees; it was the port's decision based on what we knew at the time."...[Said the Rabi] "I am devastated, shocked and appalled at the decision that the Port of Seattle came to," he said Sunday...

...The rabbi has also offered to give the port an electric menorah to display, said his lawyer, Harvey Grad...

Court says New Jersey elementary can't censor future Christian songs

December 12, 2006- A federal court has issued an order that will prevent a New Jersey school from censoring students' Christian musical selections in future talent shows.

The Alliance Defense Fund said the order comes down in favor of an elementary school student who, when she was a second-grader in May 2005, had been chosen to participate in the competition, and then picked "Awesome God," made famous by the late singer-songwriter Rich Mullins, to perform.

Officials at Frenchtown Elementary School denied her permission, a decision endorsed by the board of education, citing not only the song's religious content but its "proselytizing" nature...

...The court ruling, by U.S. District Judge Freda Wolfson, rejected arguments from officials at Frenchtown Elementary school that the song was inappropriate because of its "overtly religious message and proselytizing nature."

The ruling, which granted a motion for summary judgment on behalf of the student, said the song chosen and sung "by an individual student … was the private speech of a student and not a message conveyed by the school itself."

A victory for "Away in a Manger"

Monday, December 11, 2006- Late last week at the Lakeview Elementary School in Wilson County, Tennessee, moms and dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles gathered at the school to watch the performance of the elementary students' Christmas program. Also in attendance were three lawyers, including our Senior Counsel from the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). The Wilson County School System has been sued by the ACLU because last year's program included the singing of the song, "Away in a Manger." The ACLU actually alleged in the complaint that when people joined in to sing "Away in a Manger," it violated the Constitution because the song is "exclusively Christian in nature, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ." They went on to allege that "only the Christian viewpoint of Christmas was recognized and celebrated at this program."

As this case was filed in federal court, the ACLJ (not ACLU) represented school officials. I wanted to make sure that the ACLU's censorship attack would not be successful, and I am happy to report that at the program last week, students sang "Away in a Manger" in the presence of three lawyers and no additional legal action has been taken. But isn't it ridiculous that three lawyers had to monitor what fifth and sixth graders would be singing at the school's event? Have we reached a point in our culture where students singing a song that some might disagree with can now become a basis of censorship? For all the ACLU's talk of championing freedom of speech, they certainly weren't championing the freedom of speech of these students. The good news is that reason prevailed and the song was sung...

Atheists Sue Over Church Bells

December 12, 2006 GRISWOLD, Conn. --Local officials vow that the bells of a Baptist church will continue to peal above the complaints of atheists.

A sound system owned by the borough of Jewett City and the town of Griswold and housed in a church has prompted the Connecticut chapter of American Atheists Inc. to demand that the governments cut their ties with the bells. The group also wants the volume turned down.

More than 75 residents pushed back Monday, demanding that the borough's Board of Warden and Burgesses not silence the sound system that plays the chimes heard throughout the area....

Pentagon Evangelism Called 'National Security Threat'

December 12, 2006 - Christian military officers who share their faith at work in the Pentagon pose a threat to national security, according to a group that advocates for religious neutrality in the military.

Public displays of faith by high-ranking military officers project an image of a Christian nation waging war on non-Christians, both inside and outside the United States, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation said Monday.

This created an "internal national security issue every bit as great as the one we're fighting outwardly," said the organization's president, Mikey Weinstein...

Expelled Muslim boy's father blames school [Boy urinates on Bible]

December 08, 2006 THE father of a Muslim boy expelled from the East Preston Islamic College for urinating on the Bible, burning pages from it then spitting on it has lashed out at the school, saying it failed to protect and control his son...

...When asked why the boys chose to desecrate the Bible, Ibrahim shrugged his shoulders and said he did not know...

But his father, Omar, was angry at the school [and] has withdrawn all of his five children who attend the college and says they will no longer go to an Islamic school...

...EPIC principal Shaheem Doutie said the school community was shocked by the desecration and said the college placed great emphasis on religious tolerance.

However, as revealed in The Australian yesterday, the school's library contained a video of a banned cleric calling Australian Christians "evil" and non-Muslim schools "sewers". http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,20891402-2702,00.html

And so of course the Christians in the community rioted and tried to behead the whole family...right? I mean, that's what Muslims would have done if this had been the Quran.

Rentech in New Coal-to-Liquids Fuels Project in West Virginia

The Mingo County Redevelopment Authority (MCRA), Williamson, West Virginia and Rentech, Inc. have entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) for the development of a Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) fuels plant to be located in Mingo County (the Mingo Project).

Located in the lower portion of southwestern West Virginia, the Mingo Project would utilize Rentech's Fischer-Tropsch technology to convert synthesis gas, a combination of hydrogen and carbon monoxide produced from the West Virginia coal, into transportation fuels to be used in the Mingo County region.

The parties intend to cooperate to develop, finance, own and operate the project which could produce approximately 10,000 to 30,000 barrels per day of the ultra-clean fuels...

...Rentech uses a proprietary iron-based catalyst in its Fischer-Tropsch reactors. According to the company, the qualities of the iron-based catalyst make it very flexible, and able to convert economically the synthesis gas made from the widest range of hydrocarbon feedstocks...

Crop Report: Corn Prices Keep Rising-

12/11/06 WASHINGTON (AP) -- Farmers are getting the best price for corn in more than a decade amid strong demand for ethanol and feed, the Agriculture Department reported Monday.

Average corn prices for the year were forecast at $2.90 to $3.30 a bushel, up 10 cents from last month's estimate, according to the monthly crop report.

The last time prices were as good was 1995, when the average was $3.25 a bushel. This year is the fifth time corn prices have risen above $3 a bushel. Last year's average was $2 a bushel.

The production forecast was unchanged at 10.7 billion bushels of corn, down from last year's 11.1 billion bushels. The nation's ethanol fuel plants are expected to use about 20 percent of the corn crop, and exports should consume roughly the same share...

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/061211/crop_report.html?.v=4

But, but, but it was to be cheap/replenish able fuel. Wait till ethanol gets going - you'll be paying 2 bucks for an ear of corn...

Day wrote that a recent cold snap had him "begging for Big Al's Glacial Melt when the mercury hit -24.'' (note: that’s “minus” 24)

About 22 towns and cities in British Columbia "had broken all-time records for paralyzing frigid temperatures,'' Day wrote.

UN Report Pours 'Cold Water' on Global Warming, Senator Says

December 12, 2006- A United Nations study due for release early next year will reportedly lower estimates of mankind's impact on the earth's climate by 25 percent, a development a leading climate change skeptic in the U.S. Senate says will pour "cold water" on "global warming alarmism."

"We are all skeptics now," Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the U.S. Senate Environment & Public Works Committee, said in response to media leaks on a report by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is set to be published next February.

London's Telegraph reported Sunday that the IPCC draft report reduces its overall estimate of the human impact on global warming by one-fourth, and halves its predictions for rises in sea-level by 2100.

The IPCC's new figures are attributed to "a refinement due to better data on how climate works."

http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewNation.asp?Page=/Nation/archive/200612/NAT20061212a.html

Yeah, and as they get better data those figures will drop even more...

So basically they still don't know how the climate works, yet they want to make sweeping changes. It's a good thing we didn't follow their recommendations in the 70's when they were peddling global cooling

Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat

Summary Over two decades ago, Idso (1986) published a small item in Nature advancing the idea that the aerial fertilization effect of the CO2 that is liberated by the burning of coal, gas and oil was destined to dramatically enhance the productivity of earth's vegetation. In fact, in a little book he had published four years earlier (Idso, 1982), he had predicted that "CO2 effects on both the managed and unmanaged biosphere will be overwhelmingly positive," if not "mind-boggling." And in a monograph based on a lecture he gave nine years later (Idso, 1995), he said that "we appear to be experiencing the initial stages of what could truly be called a rebirth of the biosphere, the beginnings of a biological rejuvenation that is without precedent in all of human history." Consequently, and in light of the fact that Idso's worldview is the exact opposite of the apocalyptic vision promoted by climate alarmists, it is instructive to periodically check to see what real-world observations reveal about the matter; and in this brief summary we do so for the continent of Africa.

In an article by Fred Pearce that was posted on the website of New Scientist magazine on 16 September 2002 entitled "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat," we were told the story of vegetation reclaiming great tracts of barren land across the entire southern edge of the Sahara. This information likely came as a bit of a surprise to many, since the United Nations Environment Program had reported to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in August of that year that over 45% of the continent was experiencing severe desertification. The world of nature, however, told a vastly different story...

...Due to the stunning increase in vegetation over the past quarter-century in the Sahel, as reported in our Editorial of 11 Jan 2006, the African region was recently featured in a special issue of the Journal of Arid Environments entitled "The 'Greening' of the Sahel." Diabetes breakthrough: Toronto scientists cure disease in mice

(and it doesn’t involve stem cells, embryonic or adult)

Friday, December 15, 2006

In a discovery that has stunned even those behind it, scientists at a Toronto hospital say they have proof the body's nervous system helps trigger diabetes, opening the door to a potential near-cure of the disease that affects millions of Canadians.

Diabetic mice became healthy virtually overnight after researchers injected a substance to counteract the effect of malfunctioning pain neurons in the pancreas...

...Suspecting a link between the nerves and diabetes, he and Dr. Salter used an old experimental trick -- injecting capsaicin, the active ingredient in hot chili peppers, to kill the pancreatic sensory nerves in mice that had an equivalent of Type 1 diabetes.

"Then we had the biggest shock of our lives," Dr. Dosch said. Almost immediately, the islets began producing insulin normally "It was a shock ? really out of left field, because nothing in the literature was saying anything about this."

...So next they injected the neuropeptide "substance P" in the pancreases of diabetic mice, a demanding task given the tiny size of the rodent organs. The results were dramatic.

The islet inflammation cleared up and the diabetes was gone. Some have remained in that state for as long as four months, with just one injection...

Christmas With The ACLU: Eliminating Freedom, To Protect Liberty

By Alan Sears Wednesday, December 13, 2006

This Christmas, while most Americans are looking for presents under the tree, the American Civil Liberties Union will be following their own hallowed holiday tradition: looking for scapegoats, under the guise of preserving liberty.

…Among the activities giving the ACLU the willies:

The Praying Parents, a group that meets once a month in the school cafeteria before school to pray for students, staff, and faculty…

… Of course, the ACLU is on record as defending adults who want to have sex with children, or put child pornography on the Internet. So, preying on kids is okay, but praying for them is dangerous stuff? More at:

ACLU: The Abolishing Christian Legacy Union

By Chuck Norris December 11, 2006

...The ACLU has been true to form this December in opposing any and all Christian practices and symbols in public arenas and elsewhere.

So far this season it has already muscled the city council in Berkley, Mich. to move a Christmas nativity off public property.

The ACLU also sued the Wilson County School System outside of Nashville, Tenn., because its Christmas program included ''Christian themes and songs'' – what the ACLU calls ''unconstitutional and illegal'' acts through which its plaintiffs have ''suffered irreparable damage.''

Alongside its crusade to suppress Christmas, the ACLU of Tennessee also found time to write Cumberland County Mayor Brock Hill to assure the removal from the courthouse sidewalk of a wooden carved statue depicting Moses holding the Ten Commandments...

...The ACLU is not anti-religion, just anti-Christian. By definition, it's the American Civil Liberties Union. By action, it has become the Abolishing Christian Legacy Union.

The ACLU will assure Muslim clerics and imams the right to pray on planes, fight for an atheist's rights to remove a cross, stand beside pro-abortionists, help illegal aliens cross our borders, and establish rights for the sexual deviant by forming the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Project, but what is it doing for Christians and Christmas censorship?

(Successes as the) War on Christmas Continues:

...here are just a few examples:

In Fayetteville , Ark. , McNair Middle School removed a teacher’s Nativity scene and Star of David from a larger display that also included secular holiday decorations. After Liberty Counsel sent a legal memorandum showing that the display was constitutional, school officials reversed the ban.

In Ohio , a public school teacher was told not to say “Merry Christmas” in class. Again, Liberty Counsel sent a legal memo to the district superintendent and an administrator has now advised teachers that they may say “Merry Christmas.”

In Wisconsin , a public school employee was told by the principal that a musical program scheduled to take place in a church was going to be moved to a different location. Liberty Counsel sent a legal memo about Christmas to the school. After receiving the memo, the principal decided to keep the event at the church.

In Orlando , Fla. , seniors in a retirement home received a directive to strip the common areas of any religious symbols or words in Christmas displays. At the management’s direction, an employee actually cut the wings off the angel on the Christmas tree. Liberty Counsel is at work in this case.

Mathew Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel and dean of the Liberty University School of Law, said, “There is a war on Christmas in this country. Every victory goes a long way toward winning the battle, but we must not take Christmas or our religious freedom for granted. Celebrating Christmas is the classic example of religious accommodation mandated by the First Amendment. If Christmas is silenced or censored, we all lose a piece of our religious freedom.”

No War on Christmas? You’d have to be “the Grinch” himself not to see it. There is indeed such a war and Christians are in the crosshairs. We must continue to stand up for our rights, my friends. If we don’t, it is readily apparent that they will be quickly eradicated... full article at:

Two ninety-year-old men, Moe and Sam, have been friends all their lives.

It seems that Sam is dying, and Moe comes to visit him every day.

"Sam," says Moe, "You know how we have both loved baseball all our lives, and how we played minor league ball together for so many years.

Sam, you have to do me one favor. When you get to Heaven, and I know you will go to Heaven, somehow you've got to let me know if there's baseball in Heaven."

Sam looks up at Moe from his deathbed, and says, "Moe, you've been my best friend many years. This favor, if it is at all possible, I'll do it for you." And shortly after that, Sam passes on.

It is midnight a couple of nights later. Moe is sound asleep when he is awakened by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calls out to him, Moe.... Moe...."

"Who is it?" says Moe sitting up suddenly. "Who is it?"

"Moe, it's me, Sam."

"Come on. You're not Sam. Sam just died."

"I'm telling you," insists the voice. "It's me, Sam!"

"Sam? Is that you? Where are you?"

"I'm in heaven," says Sam, "and I've got to tell you, I've got really good news and a little bad news." "So, tell me the good news first," says Moe.

"The good news," says Sam "is that there is baseball in heaven. Better yet, all our old buddies who've gone before us are there. Better yet, we're all young men again. Better yet, it's always spring time and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play baseball all we want, and we never get tired!"

"Really?" says Moe, "That is fantastic, wonderful beyond my wildest dreams! But, what's the bad news?"

"You're pitching next Tuesday."

Man in Germany stops Brazil robbery via Internet
Dec 13, 2006 -A Brazilian businessman traveling in Germany watched by live video as a burglar robbed his house on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil…

…The businessman, Joao Pedro Wettlauser, was in Cologne this weekend when he received an alert on his cell phone from the security system in his beach house in Guaruja in Sao Paulo state, police said on Tuesday. (I wonder why the security system didn’t notify the police?}

He logged on to his laptop and via the Internet saw live images of the burglar at work. He then phoned his wife, who was not at the house but called the local police.

Cathedral puts out the flames of Christingle
12/13/2006 -For the first time in more than 250 years, children will not be allowed to carry candles at a cathedral service in case their hair catches fire.

There is no record of a child going up in flames since the Christingle service began at Chelmsford Cathedral in 1747. However, children this year will carry fluorescent glow sticks rather than the traditional candles set in oranges.

Eric Pickles, the MP for nearby Brentwood and Ongar, criticised the move yesterday, saying Christmas was becoming homogenised, dull and full of earnestness.

"Eventually, they will work out a way to take all the fun out of Christmas," he said.

...The Christmas Eve service is centred on each child's Christingle - an orange with four spikes in it holding sweets and, usually, a lighted candle in the top, symbolising Christ's light and love.

Richard Spilsbury, one of the organisers, said some parents had raised concerns about their children's hair catching fire... ...So the fluorescent tubes were proposed, though it has not been decided yet when the children will shake them to activate the light...

Teacher in Crack Over Butt Art
December 12, 2006 RICHMOND, Va. ...Outside of class and under an alter ego, the self-proclaimed "butt-printing artist" creates floral and abstract art by plastering his posterior and genitals with paint and pressing them against canvas. His cheeky creations sell for hundreds of dollars.

This has not gone over well with Chesterfield County school officials, who placed Murmer on administrative leave from his job at Monacan High School.

Murmer contacted the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia after he was suspended on Friday, ACLU legal director Rebecca Glenberg said...

...Chesterfield County schools spokeswoman Debra Marlow [said] "In the school system, personnel regulations state that teachers are expected to set an example for students through their personal conduct. Additionally, the Supreme Court has stated that schools must teach by example and that teachers, like parents, are role models."

"As a public employee, he has constitutional rights, and he certainly has the right to engage in private legal activities protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution," Willis said.
(I didn't realize painting with your pecker was protected by the constitution!! See first paragraph. He can still be a painter if he wants to be, no one is stopping him. However, being shocking or deviant doesn’t constitute art in my book. He’s less interested in art than he is about “making a statement.” And what is that statement? That’s what the school officials are rightly concerned about.)

School Caves over ONE Parent Complaint: Quits publishing Honor Roll
December 12, 2006 Needham High School has abandoned its long-standing practice of publishing the names of students who make the honor roll in the local newspaper.

Principal Paul Richards said a key reason for stopping the practice is its contribution to students' stress level in "this high-expectations-high-achievement culture." (what do you think will happen if expectations are lowered and incentives removed?)

The proposal to stop publishing the honor roll came from a parent... (one complaint stopped it!!)

...Richards said one parent with three children attending Needham High told him publishing the honor roll is a constant cause of stress in her family. According to that parent, one of the three students routinely made the honor roll while the other two did not.

...Richards said publishing of the honor roll represented "an unhealthy focus on grades." (What an understanding principal)

Class president at Cooper City High charged with changing grades of 19 students
December 13 2006 Cooper City High School's senior class president was arrested Tuesday and charged in a grade-tampering scandal that has rocked the campus.

Ryan C. He was released from jail on bail, has been suspended from school and will be recommended for expulsion, said Joe Melita, head of the Broward County School District's investigative unit...

Looks like Adult stem cells win again...
Hair Follicle Cells Offer Embryonic Stem Cell Research Alternative
Scientists at the Medical College of Wisconsin have found what may be another alternative to embryonic stem cells. They have found that adult stem cells from hair follicles, which don't involve the destruction of human life to obtain, are different from other types of skin cells...

...The college says the study resolves conflicting scientific opinions by showing that these cells are distinctly different from other types of skin-resident stem cells...

The MCW research team has reported their findings in a recent issue of Stem Cells: The International Journal of Cell Differentiation and Proliferation.

Epidermal neural crest stem cells are found in the bulge of hair follicles and have characteristics that combine some advantages of embryonic and adult stem cells, according to lead researcher, Maya Sieber-Blum, Ph.D.

Similar to embryonic stem cells, they have a high degree of plasticity, can be isolated at high levels of purity, and can be expanded in culture.

Sieber-Blum says the hair cells are similar to other types of adult stem cells, as they are readily accessible through a minimally invasive procedure and could lead to using a patient's own hair as a source for therapy without the controversy or transplant problems associated with embryonic stem cells.

"We see the potential for cell replacement therapy in which patients can be their own donors, which would avoid ethical issues and reduce the possibility of tissue incompatibility," says Dr. Sieber-Blum.

The Medical College team in collaboration with Prof. Martin Schwab, director of the Brain Research Institute of the University of Zьrich, recently injected these cells in mice with spinal cord injuries...when grafted into the spine, the cells not only survived, but also demonstrated several desirable characteristics that could lead to local nerve replacement and re-myelination (restoration of nerve pathways and sheaths)...

"We grafted the cells into mice that have spinal cord injuries and were encouraged by the results. The cells survived and integrated into the spinal cord, remaining at the site of transplantation and not forming tumors," Dr. Sieber-Blum says.

The transplant of embryonic stem cells have caused problems in animal research because they have formed tumors that would cause severe problems in humans...

...Sieber-Blum points out that the hair follicle cells may also be useful to treat Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Hirschsprung's disease, stroke, peripheral neuropathies and ALS. Certain defects of the heart, and bone defects could also be treated through neural crest stem cell replacement therapy.

Medical Expert Debunks JAMA Article Claiming Fetuses Feel No Pain
December 13, 2006-
(AgapePress) - …Last week, a discredited 2005 article published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, or JAMA, was cited by House Democrats who voted against the passage of the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act. The JAMA article claimed that, since an unborn baby's brain is not fully developed until 29 weeks, the child will not feel pain during an abortion.

But Dr. Sanjay Gupta, director of the Atlantic Pain and Wellness Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, says evidence from neonatal studies shows brain circuits start developing before 29 weeks of age…

...Gupta points out that the JAMA article in question was not based on research but was simply an opinion from pro-abortion activists, including one involved with an abortion clinic…
