This blog is devoted to topics that interest me and perhaps I'll post information that "the mainstream media" chooses to ignore or deemphasize. The point here is not to debate what I post, just consider it another point of view if you disagree with it, you know, be "open minded" and "tolerant."

Table Blessing
One meal a man was asking for the blessing of the meal in a low voice.

Somebody at the table said, “I can't hear you.”

The man replied, “I wasn't talking to you.”

Director and cast return for 'Narnia' sequel
Feb 2- A sequel to the wildly successful movie "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe" is set to begin production later this year, with Andrew Adamson returning as director… The first film's principal cast will also be back.

The film's backers, Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media, are eying a Christmas 2007 release for "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian."

..."Caspian," published in 1951, is the second book in the seven-book series written by C.S. Lewis.

… "Narnia" has grossed more than $637.8 million (360 million pounds) at the worldwide boxoffice. Internationally, it ranks as Disney's top-grossing live-action release of all time, surpassing "Armageddon" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" with its gross to date of $359.4 million. The film has grossed $278 million domestically and is the studio's third-highest-grossing live-action film. It is on track to surpass "Pirates'" worldwide gross of $655 million to become Disney's all-time top live-action grosser.

'Message' movies flop at box office
Friday, February 3, 2006- Some of the buzz about the Academy Awards nominations, announced this week, is refreshingly spontaneous. It didn't take press releases or spinners to make the results seem interesting: All of the best-picture nominees are positioned as socially conscious films, most with a strong political theme and a relatively low budget. Big studio hits didn't get much respect in any major category this year.

...it may be too early to celebrate a new age of the provoc-auteur.

The main reason, as always, is audiences. Their taste in entertainment, much lamented among the socially conscious, now runs to big, spangly movies full of wonder or to stories with a minimum of ideology and a maximum of happy endings. This helps explain why this year's best-film nominees, with their somber themes, did not attract notably large crowds compared with many other, less ambitious films. …"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe" which opened only in December, has pulled in about $278 million.

Appellate Ruling Affirms Florida Citizen's Right to Host Home Prayer Meetings
February 2, 2006- (AgapePress) - …Five years ago, officials in Orange County, Florida, ordered Rabbi Joseph Konikov to stop holding prayer meetings in his home, claiming that in holding these gatherings he was violating local laws. Then, in May 2002, after officials refused to negotiate a settlement, Konikov sued the County.

A district court dismissed the case, ruling that the ordinance was permissible. However, the 11th Circuit ruled that the ordinance is not permissible, stating that it violated the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act.

Rick Nelson, head of the American Liberties Institute, feels the 11th Circuit's ruling proves that the County's ordinance was too vague. "Obviously the rabbi and all the churches across Orange County are very, very pleased," he says.

That is because, now, people of faith "can actually have Bible studies in their home or do any other kind of religious activity in their home without the government coming along and foreclosing on your house and throwing you in the street for doing so," Nelson explains.

...The Constitution of the United States gives Americans the right to meet in their homes for prayer or to study religious materials without the interference of the state, Nelson asserts. He says Orange County will now have to rewrite its land use ordinance.

NBC halts Britney's crucifixion mockery
February 3, 2006- Reacting to pressure from Christian groups, NBC canceled an episode of "Will & Grace" that featured Britney Spears as a conservative who hosts a cooking segment called "Cruci-fixin's" on a Christian TV network. ... The episode was to air April 13, just before Good Friday.

The American Family Association said NBC canceled the segment after pressure from its affiliates and AFA. …But the network said its own description of the segment was a mistake.

In a memo to affiliates, NBC said "the information was mistakenly included in a press release describing an upcoming episode of 'Will and Grace' which, in fact, has yet to be written. The reference to 'Cruci-fixins' will not be in the show and the story line will not contain a Christian characterization at all."

"NBC wanting us to believe they were mistaken in describing the segment, that they didn't know what was in their own press release, just doesn't hold water," said AFA Chairman Donald E. Wildmon. "Plainly put, NBC heard from their affiliates that they did not want to go through another 'Book of Daniel' situation while losing millions in advertising avenue."

MD Lawmakers block vote on marriage
February 3, 2006- ANNAPOLIS -- Democratic lawmakers in Maryland, determined to avoid a vote on homosexual "marriage" in an election year, closed the House yesterday to quash a constitutional amendment endorsing traditional marriage.

In a move unprecedented in the modern history of the General Assembly, House Speaker Michael E. Busch abruptly recessed the chamber to block a vote on a proposed amendment that would define marriage as a union only of one man and one woman.

The Democratic speaker's action allowed the House Judiciary Committee to kill the proposal later yesterday, likely preventing it from being voted on by the full House this session.

Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., a Republican who supports the amendment, said closing the House was "at least, an abuse of the spirit of the rules."

...But tensions escalated when Judiciary Committee Democrats changed the amendment's bill to include civil unions as an equivalent to "marriage" for same-sex couples.

...The marriage debate has dominated the General Assembly since a Baltimore Circuit Court judge ruled last month that the state's 33-year-old ban on same-sex "marriage" is unconstitutional. A constitutional amendment would nullify the court ruling, but opponents say it would discriminate against homosexuals by denying them the "civil right of marriage."

...voters ultimately would decide whether to amend the state's constitution when they go to the polls in November.

...Democrats are reluctant to put the amendment on the ballot because it would energize conservatives in an election year in which Mr. Ehrlich is seeking re-election and Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, a Republican, is running for U.S. Senate....

Tribes gave to Reid after hiring Abramoff
Feb. 03, 2006-- Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada began receiving campaign contributions from at least four American Indian tribes only after they hired Jack Abramoff...

On Thursday, Reid shrugged off questions about money he received from tribal clients of Abramoff, who pleaded guilty last month to three felonies after being accused of exchanging meals, travel and gifts for political favors.

… Reid received more than $50,000 from four tribes with gaming interests between 2001 and 2004 after they hired Abramoff. The Nevadan had received no money from those tribes before then…

Reid has acknowledged receiving $61,000 from tribal clients and lobbying colleagues of Abramoff. He has said the money was legally raised, that he has done nothing improper and does not plan to refund the donations…

Change in sex habits cut HIV infections in Zimbabwe
Feb 3- A change in the sexual behavior of young people in Zimbabwe probably caused a sharp decline in HIV virus infections in the south African country, according to a study published in the United States.

A reduction in casual sex among experienced men and women, and the delay of others' first sexual experiences, drove a steep fall in the rate of infections of HIV, the virus which causes AIDS, said the study.

An international team of researchers from Britain, Zimbabwe and South Africa which surveyed the behavior and infection rates of people in eastern Zimbabwe between 1998 and 2003 observed a 49 percent reduction in HIV infections among women aged 15 to 24.

…"Give this grim scenario, the significant decline in HIV prevalence in Zimbabwe ... provides clear evidence of a reduction in HIV prevalence associated with behavior change in this region of Africa," said authors Richard Hayes and Helen Weiss of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

We're not running out of oil says Shell
Royal Dutch Shell yesterday shrugged off suggestions from US president George W Bush that America should lose its addiction to oil, adding that the world was nowhere near to running out of black gold.

...Shell was feeling "very good" about the prospect of finding plenty of oil and gas, by developing hitherto untouched parts of the globe…World oil and gas production was nowhere near peaking because of the potential of untapped reserves made economic by the higher oil price…

He said: "There is the theory of 'peak oil' - that the big discoveries have all gone. But we don't know where the peak will come with oil sands. With oil shale, we have not yet started. There will be many peaks in many time frames."
