This blog is devoted to topics that interest me and perhaps I'll post information that "the mainstream media" chooses to ignore or deemphasize. The point here is not to debate what I post, just consider it another point of view if you disagree with it, you know, be "open minded" and "tolerant."

Factory Orders Rise 1.2 Percent in June
August 03, 2006 WASHINGTON — America's factories saw orders grow by the largest amount in three months the government reported Thursday, an encouraging economic sign.

The Commerce Department said new bookings to the nation's manufacturing sector rose by 1.2 percent in June, the most since March. All the strength reflected demand for "durable" goods, including transportation equipment, computers, and fabricated metal products.

...The latest batch of economic reports released Thursday suggest that although the economy is slowing it remains in fundamentally decent shape and doesn't appear headed for a dangerous backslide toward recession...

U.S. Economy Adds 113,000 Jobs in July, Unemployment Rises to 4.8 Percent
August 04, 2006 (AP) WASHINGTON — Hiring slowed in July as employers added just 113,000 new jobs, propelling the unemployment rate to a five-month high of 4.8 percent and providing fresh evidence that companies are growing cautious amid high energy prices. Wages grew solidly.

(I learned in my college Economic classes that 5% unemployment was considered "full employment" and very difficult to achieve. Therefore anything under 5% should be joyfully heralded, yet the AP somehow managed to turn it into a negative story)

In case you didn’t know, it’s winter south of the equator…
Floods, Snow Cause Havoc in South African Cities
SOUTH AFRICA: August 4, 2006- Heavy rain drenched large parts of South Africa's southern areas on Thursday, flooding roads and damaging houses in devastating storms, while deep snow forced mountain passes to close. Temperatures dropped to record lows for August as snow fell in industrial hub Johannesburg for the first time in eight years in what local residents say is an unusually severe winter.
The city saw a high of 7 degrees Celsius (44 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday -- the lowest daily high recorded in August -- while overnight temperatures dropped well below freezing in some parts of the country. Colder temperatures are expected this weekend. http://www.planetark.com/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/37516/story.htm

Deficit estimated lowest in 4 years
WASHINGTON - The federal deficit will register $260 billion this year, the lowest in four years, reflecting a strong economy and resulting growth in tax revenue, congressional analysts said Friday.

The estimate by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office is well below its earlier predictions and also below the $296 billion White House estimate less than a month ago.

Better-than-expected revenues are driving the deficit down from last year's $318 billion figure and far below the record $413 billion posted in 2004.

...The deficit picture is even better when measured against the size of the economy, which is the comparison economists think is most important.

"At 2 percent of gross domestic product, the 2006 deficit would be smaller than the deficit recorded in the past three years — 3.5 percent in 2003, 3.6 percent in 2004 and 2.6 percent in 2005," said the CBO report.

So far this year, taxes on corporate profits are 27 percent or $56 billion higher compared to the first 10 months of last year. That reflects the strong economy. All told, receipts from corporate profits are estimated to tally two and a half times those collected in 2003, CBO said.

...Receipts are also 20 percent higher on income and payroll taxes paid quarterly by wealthier people and small businessmen...Tax receipts are estimated to run $223 billion higher than 2005, CBO said.

...credited fiscal policies centered on tax cuts passed in 2001 and 2003 and a clampdown on domestic agencies funded by Congress each year. Were it not for the war in Iraq and ongoing hurricane relief costs, the deficit would be far lower...

Hijack a plane, qualify for welfare state benefits
LONDON • The government lost a legal battle yesterday over the status of nine Afghans who hijacked a plane, flew it to London and threatened to blow it up if they were denied political asylum.

British Home Secretary John Reid lost a Court of Appeal battle over his legal powers to take away the right to work and curb the freedom of nine Afghans who hijacked a plane to enter Britain six years ago.

The court dismissed Reid’s appeal and upheld an earlier High Court ruling which said the hijackers were entitled to “discretionary leave” to enter and remain in Britain.

That allows them to work, possibly claim state benefits and support their families in Britain.

Data Contradicts Notion of Widespread Iraqi Civil War
August 04, 2006 A vast majority of Americans say they expect the current sectarian violence in Iraq to become a full-scale civil war, but U.S. military data compiled in Iraq indicates that over a two-month period ending on July 21, most of the violence happened in just four of Iraq's 18 provinces.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, when asked on July 25 whether he believed a civil war was inevitable in Iraq, told reporters that such a conclusion was wrong. "If you think of civil wars in other countries, this is really quite different," he said.

Rumsfeld explained that the insurgency was concentrated in "Baghdad and two or three other provinces, and yet in 14 other provinces there's very little violence or numbers of incidents."

Say hello to the grand jury, Sid
… Sidney Blumenthal (Hillary Clinton’s left-hand man) has leaked the fact that NSA is assisting Israel in tracking weapons shipments from Iran and Syria to Hezbollah, gaining him anti-Israel supporters and (one hopes) a chance to talk to the grand jury investigating NSA leaks:

Why would Sydney Blumenthal risk everything to publicize the fact he has been leaked – and is publicizing – classified information? The leftwing, anti-Israel sites are lapping this up. But my guess is Sidney just won himself an invite to a Grand Jury looking into leaks at the NSA:

A report by columnist Sidney Blumenthal in Salon claims that Israel is receiving intelligence from the US’s National Security Agency. Blumenthal claims to be in touch with “a national security official with direct knowledge of the operation” to supply Israel with signals intelligence from American assets to help it monitor armament transfers from Syria and Iran to Hezbollah. He states that President Bush has approved the intelligence sharing. [....]

...whatever idiotic Walter Mitty fantasies that are running through this loser’s head it is clear he just alerted Iran and Syria and Hezbollah to the fact their activities are being monitored, giving them clear warning to change tactics if they want to remain undetected. When did the left become so overwhelmed with Bush Derangement Syndrome that they would help terrorists move military supplies into the battle field so more Israeli civilians can die?

Reuters scandal demands an outside investigation
Reuters now admits supplying the world’s media with crude propaganda pictures, faked by an Arab photographer. The agency’s journalistic standards are now a global laughingstock. If the agency hopes to regain credibility it must appoint an outside panel of experts to review other work of the same photographer, including the controversial photos supplied from Qana.

Reuters has informed Adnan Hajj that they will not accept any more of his work. He is now identified as a “free lance photographer.” The agency also notes Hajj worked for Reuters as a non-staff freelance, or contributing photographer, from 1993 until 2003 and again since April 2005.

He was among several photographers from the main international news agencies whose images of a dead child being held up by a rescuer in the village of Qana, south Lebanon, after an Israeli air strike on July 30 have been challenged by blogs critical of the mainstream media’s coverage of the Middle East conflict.

…Since Reuters now acknowledges that it has been hoaxed, and in turn has hoaxed the world’s media, doesn’t it owe us a detailed explanation of its standards? Shouldn’t the review of the Qana pictures be put into the hands of an independent panel of experts?
