This blog is devoted to topics that interest me and perhaps I'll post information that "the mainstream media" chooses to ignore or deemphasize. The point here is not to debate what I post, just consider it another point of view if you disagree with it, you know, be "open minded" and "tolerant."

Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
No. 1 retailer has decided to abandon its generic 'Happy Holidays' greeting in favor of 'Merry Christmas.',[finally!!]
November 9 2006 NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wal-Mart has told its employees that it's OK to once again greet shoppers by saying "Merry Christmas" this holiday season instead of the generic "Happy Holidays."

CNN confirmed that Wal-Mart will announce Thursday that it plans to use the phrase "Merry Christmas" in products and around its stores this holiday season.

The announcement comes a year after religious groups such as The American Family Association and The Catholic League boycotted retailers including Wal-Mart last holiday season for excluding the word "Christmas" from products sold in stores.

"We, quite frankly, have learned a lesson from last year," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Linda Blakley told USA Today in a separate report. "We're not afraid to use the term 'Merry Christmas.' We'll use it early, and we'll use it often."

Low-carb diet doesn't raise heart risk (I guess the scare was all hype…)

November 8, 2006- Eating a low-carb, high-fat diet for years doesn't raise the risk of heart disease, a long-term study suggests, easing fears that the popular Atkins diet and similar regimens might set people up for eventual heart attacks...

...Conventional wisdom says risk of heart disease should increase for those eating the lowest-carb, highest-fat diet, said lead author Thomas Halton. "It didn't, which was a little eye-opening," he said...

Heart attack victims to be given own stem cells [adult not embryonic stem cells]
November 08, 2006 -A revolutionary treatment is giving patients hope of making a much more rapid recovery.

Heart attack victims will be given a revolutionary new treatment involving an injection of their own stem cells to repair the organ damage that they have suffered.

Groundbreaking clinical trials are to start at two London hospitals into the use of the therapy, which is carried out within hours of a cardiac arrest...

...[adult] Stem cells found in the bone marrow have the capacity to develop into a wide variety of cells. In this case, it is hoped that they will turn into muscle cells, repairing the damage of the heart attack or preventing it from occurring...

“We believe that if we give it immediately, it can prevent damage. We will show whether it works in acute heart attack — and the treatment will involve no extra stay in hospital and virtually no extra cost.”

...“Because the stem cells are taken from the patient, there are minimal ethical issues surrounding this procedure. There is also less likelihood of rejection complications.”

Adult Stem Cells used to Cure Blindness

April 29, 2005– UK physicians are pioneering the use of adult stem cells to cure blindness resulting from a damaged cornea – so far, they have used the therapy to restore eyesight in 40 patients.

Opthalmic surgeon at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Sussex, Sheraz Daya, explained to the BBC that “Many people who've had injuries to their eyes, or even people born with congenital deficiencies of stem cells, land up having a problem with the top layer of their cornea.”

Although corneal transplants have been used to treat the condition for some time, “Even if we do a corneal transplant, that will not stay clear, it'll cloud over and fail,” Dr. Daya said. “So what we need to do is replace those stem cells that are missing.”

Doctors use the patient’s own stem cells or those from a donor to re-grow the cornea – the transparent part that makes up the front surface of the eye.

Human Liver Grown from Cord Blood Stem Cells--Media Ignores UK Breakthrough
November 1, 2006 - A group of British scientists has achieved a major breakthrough in stem cell technology, growing the world’s first artificial human liver in a laboratory, using stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood. The achievement has been largely ignored, however, by North American mainstream media...

...Researchers predict the science, with none of the ethical concerns associated with the use of embryonic stem cells, will be used to repair damaged livers within the next five years, and within 15 years whole artificial livers will be grown to be used in transplants.

No mainstream media source in either the United States or Canada, however, has reported on the achievement thus far. Leading bioethics critic Wesley J. Smith, writing for the Weekly Standard, said the absence of press coverage indicates just how strong the media bias is for stem cell research using human embryos.

“A story that doesn’t validate the stem-cell mantra that embryonic stem cells offer the “best hope” for future cures isn’t worth much attention,” Smith wrote. “Even the most important adult or umbilical cord blood stem-cell breakthroughs usually receive only minor, inside-the-paper coverage.”

...Research using embryonic stem cells is highly controversial because it requires the destruction of embryos in order to “harvest” the cells. Further, to this date there has not been success in using embryonic cells to treat any disease or disorder.

In contrast, the use of adult stem cells or of cells harvested from umbilical cord blood shortly after the birth of a baby have already been used successfully to treat multiple conditions, including spinal injury and blindness.

“[I]f this new breakthrough had been accomplished with embryonic stem cells instead of umbilical cord blood stem cells, the headlines would have been enormous,” Smith predicted. “Instead, we hear the sound of silence--thanks to the news blockade that doesn’t care much about stem-cell breakthroughs unless they come from destroyed embryos.

An online news search shows several alternative media sources covering the story along with coverage by press in Australia, India, Qatar, South Africa and Turkey, but the material is “conspicuously absent” from the Associated Press, the Canadian Press, Reuters, or any of the dominant media outlets in North America.

Beheaded (3 Christian) girls 'Ramadan trophies', court hears (wanted 100 more)
November 9, 2006 - THREE Christian high school girls were beheaded as a Ramadan "trophy" by Indonesian militants who conceived the idea after a visit to Philippines jihadists, a court heard yesterday.

The girls' severed heads were dumped in plastic bags in their village in Indonesia's strife-torn Central Sulawesi province, along with a handwritten note threatening more such attacks. The note read: "Wanted: 100 more Christian heads, teenaged or adult, male or female; blood shall be answered with blood, soul with soul, head with head."

Trial halted over lawyer's veil
November 07, 2006 AN immigration tribunal was halted yesterday after a lawyer twice refused a judge’s request to remove her veil.

Shabnam Mughal was dressed from head to foot in black with a full-face veil leaving just her eyes visible...

...She was asked to remove the veil by tribunal chairman George Glossop during the hearing in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs.

She declined and the case was adjourned to the afternoon. When it reconvened the judge had to ask Miss Mughal — who is in her twenties — to repeat herself after asking how she spelt her name.

He continued: “I am not very happy that you are appearing in a veil. Would you kindly remove it to assist with communications

“It will allow me to see your face and I cannot hear you as well as I would like.” [She refused.]
