This blog is devoted to topics that interest me and perhaps I'll post information that "the mainstream media" chooses to ignore or deemphasize. The point here is not to debate what I post, just consider it another point of view if you disagree with it, you know, be "open minded" and "tolerant."

Today’s blog has much to do with “TOLERANCE.” It always amazes me how intolerant tolerant people can be when they impose tolerance on intolerant people… David

Britain's War on (toy) Pigs
(Maybe England will have to ban bacon, ham, and other such items from retaurant menues and grocery stores. DB)
…Why have pigs become so unpopular in Britain? Mahbubur Rahman, a Muslim Councillor in West Midlands, summed it up in explaining why the toy pigs had to go: “It’s a tolerance,” he said, “of people’s beliefs...”

October 6, 2005 Pigs are disappearing all over England, but not because of some porcine variant of Mad Cow Disease: rather, the most implacable foe of the swine is turning out to be multiculturalism.

The latest assault came in the benefits department at Dudley Council, West Midlands, where employees were told that they were no longer allowed to have any representations of pigs at their desks. Some had little porcine porcelain figurines. Others had toys or calendars of cute little pigs. One had a tissue box depicting Winnie the Pooh and Piglet. All of this had to go…because Muslims might be…

This was not the first anti-pig initiative in Britain. In Derby, Muslims took offense at plans to restore the statue of the Florentine Boar, which had stood in the Derby Park for over a hundred years before it was decapitated by a German bomb in 1942. Recent plans to rebuild the Boar’s head ran into resistance from local Muslims. Suman Gupta, a local Council member, warned: “If the statue of the boar is put back at the Arboretum I have been told that it will not be there the next day, or at least it won’t be in the same condition the next day at least. We should not have the boar because it is offensive to some of the groups in the immediate area…”

… March 2003, Barbara Harris, head teacher at Park Road Junior Infant and Nursery School in Batley, West Yorkshire, banned stories mentioning pigs. “Recently,” Harris explained, “I have been aware of an occasion where young Muslim children in class were read stories about pigs. We try to be sensitive to the fact that for Muslims talk of pigs is offensive.” Harris didn’t mention whether or not she intended to allow Muslim students to possess copies of the Qur’an at the school, despite its repeated mention of how Allah cursed Jews and turned them into apes and pigs (2:62-65; 5:59-60; 7:166).

Why have pigs become so unpopular in Britain? Mahbubur Rahman, a Muslim Councillor in West Midlands, summed it up in explaining why the toy pigs had to go: “It’s a tolerance,” he said, “of people’s beliefs.” …Mahbubur Rahman seems unacquainted with the dictum, widely attributed to Voltaire, that “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Yet this is what tolerance really is: the acceptance of the fact that in a free society, some will do and say things of which one may disapprove, and that one has no consequent right to command or force them to stop. If this is not recognized in any given society, that society is not in fact free at all….

For Rahman instead to equate a British capitulation to Muslim sensibilities with tolerance indicates that he has confused Islamic supremacism with tolerance.

Study Indicates ADHD Children May Just Need Sleep, Not Medication
October 6, 2005 (AgapePress) - A study by Israeli researchers shows treatment of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders in children can lead to a significant reduction in symptoms associated with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The study found that children diagnosed with ADHD had much higher levels of sleeplessness during the day than did non-ADHD youngsters. Dr. Giora Pillar is head of the Pediatric Sleep Lab at the largest hospital in northern Israel, and an associate professor at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, which conducted the study.

Pillar says sleep apnea or sleep disturbances can lead to daytime sleepiness -- and children who are sleep throughout the day do not fall asleep unintentionally like adults, but rather become hyperactive.

"They start to be fidgety and nervous, and these are actually the symptoms of ADHD," Dr. Pillar explains. "[W]hen you treat [and correct] the sleep problem, they all of a sudden become more alert during the day. They are more focused, they can concentrate better, they behave better -- and their symptoms of ADHD are actually relieved."

...According to Pillar, children with even mild sleep deprivation can develop symptoms of ADHD. And ADHD-diagnosed children, he adds, often just need quality sleep instead of medication. But he emphasizes that drugs like Ritalin -- a common treatment for ADHD -- do have their place... "But in cases when the ADHD is secondary to sleep problems like sleep apnea, then children should not get Ritalin in the morning, but rather [treatment for] the sleep disorder in the evening."

For example, he says if children diagnosed with ADHD kick their legs frequently or periodically during the night, they may have Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, which has relatively better treatment than Ritalin. The researchers urge parents to apply other treatments -- such as enforcement of good sleeping habits and restriction from caffeinated drinks at night -- before considering medication...

Teacher told to drop Star of David
(Norway) A municipally employed teacher in Kristiansand has been prevented from wearing a Star of David around his neck. Kristiansand Adult Education Center, where the man works, ruled that the Jewish symbol could be deemed a provocation towards the many Muslim students at the school, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reports.
..."I can't accept this. It is a small star, 16 millimeters (0.6 inches) that I have around my neck, usually under a T-shirt. I see it as my right to wear it," Telhaug told NRK.

Telhaug teaches immigrants Norwegian language and culture at the education center (I guess they can’t teach any culture but Muslim…). Telhaug is not Jewish…"I see it as the oldest religious symbol we have in our culture, because without Judaism there would be no Christianity."

The principal of the school, Kjell Gislefoss, feels that the Star of David can also be interpreted as a political symbol for the state of Israel, and is afraid the star can provoke and offend students, for example immigrants from the Palestinian territories.... (just like we have to worry about Mexican immigrants being offended by Davy Crockett, don’t come here if you’re going to be offended!!!)

Bill Banning 'Wrongful Birth' Lawsuits Advances in Wisconsin
October 06, 2005 A Wisconsin Senate committee has approved a bill that would prohibit "wrongful birth" and "wrongful life" lawsuits in the state.

Under current Wisconsin law, if a child is born with a disability that a health care provider could or should have informed the parents about while there was still time for an abortion, that person may be liable for the costs of caring for that child.

The bill (SB 71) bans lawsuits brought by parents of disabled children who argue that their unborn babies were not properly evaluated for possible birth defects, thus denying the parents the opportunity to abort the child. (Arguably, under this philosophy and technical capability it is quite possible I wouldn’t be alive now if I had been conceived 20 or 30 years later than I was… DB)

"Both 'wrongful birth' and 'wrongful life' lawsuits send the dangerous message that people are 'products' that can be rejected if 'quality control' somehow failed," said Peggy Hamill, state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin.

Landowners must yield to ballpark
October 6, 2005 (DC) The District will begin using eminent domain to acquire parcels of land at the site of the Washington Nationals' ballpark by the end of this month, after unsuccessful negotiations with nearly half of the landowners… The city made offers to all 23 landowners on the site last month but received no response from 10… In April, the city notified property owners on the site that they would be required to move out by Dec. 31...
…Many property owners on the site said the city's offers are inadequate. Others are suing the city on the grounds that it has no right to use eminent domain to acquire land at the site, despite a Supreme Court ruling affirming the right of municipal governments to take private property for the purpose of economic development.

Student who sat for Mexican Anthem rebuked
Enlistee-to-be feared honoring another nation might jeopardize military status
October 7, 2005 A high-school senior who stayed seated during the playing of the Mexican National Anthem at a campus ceremony – fearing if he stood he might jeopardize his upcoming enlistment in the U.S. military – was reprimanded and sent to the school office…The 17-year-old … made the choice to stay seated during a ceremony honoring Mexican Independence Day at Larkin High School last month, the Daily Herald reported.

...Last spring, a Larkin student wrote an essay lamenting the celebration of Mexican holidays in American schools, the Herald reported…The teen faulted Mexican students, saying they shouldn't have lowered the American flag in favor of a Mexican flag on Sept. 16, 2004. School officials later said the American flag was raised again before class began..."If they have an assembly, I would be happy if they will not try to force students to honor patriotic elements of another culture unless they also honor our flag, our anthem as well," Bedard said. "It's just respect for both cultures."

India's High Court to Consider Christian Dalits' Demand For Equality
(finally, a legit tolerance issue)
October 5, 2005 The Supreme Court of India will soon hear a case affecting millions of Dalit Christians. At issue is whether Christian Dalits will be given the same basic rights that Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist Dalits already enjoy under the law.

For generations many Dalits, also known as untouchables, have been at the bottom of the Hindu caste system in India. Back in 1950, the government tried to address the issue when a presidential decree granted quotas in schools and government jobs to Sikh, Buddhist, and Hindu Dalits. But, as Gospel For Asia founder K.P. Yohannan notes, millions of Dalits have become Christians and, under current law, are no longer eligible to benefit from the quota system.

Yohannan hopes lawmakers in India will eventually address the anti-Christian discrimination. "If -- and I believe God is going to do it -- they pass the bill saying that if these 300 million Dalits become Christians, no problem, they will still have all the benefits and everything," he says, "a dam is going to break, and that means no one can stop these millions of people [from] coming into the kingdom because this is the last obstacle the enemy is using: the fear of the economic development of the Dalit community."

The Gospel for Asia founder says current Indian laws give Dalit Christians virtually no rights whatsoever. He explains, "The Hindu fundamentalists in India know if these benefits for the Dalits are given and nothing is going to stop it, that means there will be mass exodus toward the Christian faith -- and that is what the problem is. They are against [that]."...The Supreme Court of India has set a new date, October 18, 2005, for reviewing the case. Members of the many outcaste advocacy groups in India that have been calling on the government to end the religious discrimination in the quota system are hopeful that this new hearing date will be final and that the court will resolve the matter in favor of equality for Dalit Christians.

Harriet Miers on Right to Bear Arms
Oct. 6, 2005 According to the Associated Press: "Miers once owned a .45-caliber revolver, a gift from a brother who was worried about her safety when she lived alone in Dallas."

"She wanted to be sure she stopped the guy," Texas Supreme Court Judge Nathan Hecht. The judge recalled one Sunday afternoon driving out to the country, setting up tin cans on a dirt road and trying to teach Miers how to shoot. So how was Miers' aim? "Terrible," said Hecht. But he said she kept the gun for a long time.

While it's not clear whether Miers is still armed, she sounds like a committed defender of the right to keep and bear arms… "The same liberties that ensure a free society make the innocent vulnerable to those who prevent rights and privileges and commit senseless and cruel acts," Miers wrote in Texas Lawyer when she was president of the state bar. "Those precious liberties include free speech, freedom to assemble ... access to public places, the right to bear arms and freedom from constant surveillance.

"We are not willing to sacrifice these rights because of the acts of maniacs," she concluded.

Northern Plains winter storm
Oct 6 BISMARCK, N.D. ...Travelers were trapped as the snowfall reached as high as 24 inches in a band stretching across North Dakota, from Dickinson in the southwest to Langdon in the northeast. Winds gusted to 50 mph in Minot.

The National Weather Service said the wintry weather was among the earliest on record in the state...National Guard soldiers worked with state troopers and other workers to rescue stranded motorists using snow plows, buses, heavy trucks and bulldozers, along with a piece of utility equipment that runs on tank-like tracks. No injuries were reported...Crews trying to clean up fallen trees in Minot were hampered by snow and ice. "A lot of the stuff is frozen to the ground," said Alan Walter, the city's public works director.
...The storm came just a few days after North Dakota had temperatures in the 90s. Warmer weather was forecast to return in the coming days.

Death toll up in Central America flooding
Oct 7 PATULUL, Guatemala (AP) -- There was a violent shudder and a roar, then the side of a volcano gave way, burying two villages under a rush of mud and floodwaters…Residents said at least 50 people were killed in the landslide in Solola, a town close to the popular tourist destination of Lake Atitlan, that remained cut off from the outside world. It was the deadliest of the floods that have killed 250 people in Central America and southern Mexico.
...The mudslide began Wednesday morning, and while most residents were able to evacuate, two villages were buried...Along the country's Pacific coast, a river broke from its banks, creating a new outlet to the sea and killing at least 20 people from a small, seaside village, the navy said...
In all, heavy rains caused floods in more than 200 Guatemalan communities and killed 154 people. Another 31,450 were forced to flee their homes... The death toll stood at 65 in neighboring El Salvador...The 250 people killed in the region included 14 earlier this week in Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica. ...The United States said it was donating $100,000 in household items to Mexico and would also offer humanitarian aid to Guatemala and other Central American countries. Mexican troops recently returned from several weeks of helping U.S. officials clean up after Hurricane Katrina.

Ex-Homosexual Blasts Time's Teen Homosexuality Article
October 6, 2005- (AgapePress) A former homosexual turned Christian activist is denouncing a new Time Magazine article on homosexual teens. The Time cover story "The Battle Over Gay Teens" reports that kids are disclosing their homosexuality with unprecedented regularity, and they are doing so much younger.

Evangelist and recording artist Stephen Bennett, who spent 11 years in a homosexual lifestyle before becoming a Christian, believes the Time piece written by homosexual John Cloud derides Christians and former homosexuals. Meanwhile, Bennett contends, the article propagates false information… The evangelist notes, "One of the lines in there that really struck me as just an outright lie -- and there are many in there -- says, 'The appearance of so many gay adolescents has predictably worried social conservatives, but it also has surprised gay activists, who for years did little to help the few teenagers who were coming out.' That's a complete lie. The Human Rights Campaign for years has had a major campaign helping teens to come out."
...Bennett asserts, "This article is filled with tons of misinformation, mocking of Bible-believing Christians, of people who have come out of homosexuality such as myself and who are happily married now."...Bennett sees Time's article on homosexual teens as another attempt to obscure the truth and promote lies about the inherency and immutability of the lifestyle. "And this is very tragic," he says...

Bennett has asked Time to run a story on former homosexuals. He says he has asked the same thing of the Oprah Winfrey Show numerous times in the wake of its repeated promotions of teenage homosexuality...
