This blog is devoted to topics that interest me and perhaps I'll post information that "the mainstream media" chooses to ignore or deemphasize. The point here is not to debate what I post, just consider it another point of view if you disagree with it, you know, be "open minded" and "tolerant."

This pretty much helps debunk the false (made-up) notion that you’re more likely to be hurt with a gun in the home than without one…
87-year-old woman fatally shoots man in her home
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
02/07/2006- An 87-year-old East St. Louis woman fatally shot a man early this morning as he was trying to break into her house.

Police said they found the man, Larry D. Tillman, 49, of East St. Louis on the enclosed front porch of the woman’s house in the 2100 block of Gaty Avenue. He had pulled the telephone wires from the side of the house, then removed security bars from a porch window.

As the man was breaking through a storm door that leads into the house itself, the woman fired several shots through her front door, striking Tillman once in the chest.

Police said the shots were fired from a pistol, most likely a gun that her daughter had given her after a man broke into the elderly woman’s house in December, battered her and stole some items.

...Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Jim Morrisey said evidence taken from the December home invasion would be compared to the break-in today to see if Tillman was responsible for both crimes.

Federal Judges Uphold NYC Schools' Discriminatory Nativity Scene Ban
February 6, 2006 (AgapePress) - A federal appeals court has ruled that it is constitutionally permissible for New York City's public schools to ban the display of a Christian Nativity scene while allowing the display of the Jewish Menorah and the Islamic star and crescent.

Several years ago the parents of two students in New York City public schools sued the school district over its policy that the display of secular holiday symbol decorations is permissible during the Christmas holiday season while display of Nativity scenes is not. Late last week, a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit ruled 2-1 in favor of the district's policy.

...Muise says the case will be taken to the entire 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals next. However, he says he expects the matter will eventually come up on appeal before the United States Supreme Court…

First-Grader Suspended For “Sexual Harassment”
Feb 7- A Brockton first-grader was suspended from school for three days last month after school officials said that he sexually harassed a girl in his class.

… officials at the Downey Elementary School called the boy's mother, Berthena Dorinvil, on Jan. 30, and asked her to pick up her child from the school. Dorinvil said that officials told her that her son was being suspended for sexually harassing a 6-year-old female classmate.

"My son told me that the girl touched him first, so he touched her back," Dorinvil said…

…School officials would not speak on camera, and police officers were posted at the school Tuesday afternoon. The school superintendent released a statement that said, "The safety and well-being of Brockton public school students and staff is of the utmost important to us, and we take all allegations of sexual harassment seriously."

Dorinvil has asked school officials to transfer her son to another school, but officials have not agreed to her request.

Seahawks Coach's Family Choose Mission to Africa Over Superbowl
The wife and daughter of Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgren have decided to skip Super Bowl XL in Detroit for something they consider more important -- a faith-based humanitarian trip to Africa.

Kathy Holmgren and daughter Calla are scheduled to leave Thursday (Feb. 2) on a 17-day medical training mission with Northwest Medical Teams -- a relief group based in Portland, Ore. -- to the northwest region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A nurse and obstetrician, respectively, the two will join six other physicians with experience as missionaries.
During the three days it takes to reach the region, the team will travel over marginal roads that narrow to near non-existence, wade through streams and cross rough-hewn and often improvised bridges.

While much of the world tunes into the Super Bowl, the team will begin training the staff of a hospital operated by the Evangelical Covenant Church, the denomination to which the Holmgrens belong. http://www.beliefnet.com/story/184/story_18451_1.html

Online Christian music ministry
...An online Christian music ministry is finding that believers in more than 200 countries -- many from places where worship music is not available on the radio -- are visiting their website, tapping into praise music in either English or Spanish, and being blessed as a result. www.AllWorship.com , based in Birmingham, Alabama, reports that online listeners from cities as far away as Tokyo, Beijing, Sao Paulo, and Kuala Lumpur are taking advantage of its offering of free worship music, without commercial interruption, in three formats: contemporary worship, praise and worship, and Spanish worship. In fact, says Bill Hardekopf, the ministry's general manager, almost half of the three-quarters of a million "stream hits" each month originate outside the borders of North America. "[P]eople can listen at home, at work, anywhere they are hooked up to the Internet -- all for free," he says. "We hope that Christians will take advantage of this free service to give them a lift in their day." He adds that more than 1,400 churches and Christian organizations are using another of www.AllWorship.com 's services: providing free background worship music for websites. "We are finding that small churches and ministries may not be able to provide music on their own, and we are happy to donate our worship streams to their sites," says Hardekopf. The listener-supported station makes a 20 Kbps broadcast available at no charge; a higher-quality "premium stream" (64 Kbps) is available to those who wish to contribute financially to support the ministry of www.AllWorship.com . Nurses want self-harmers to be given fresh blades
February 5, 2006- A professional nurses group is proposing that "self-harming" patients who are intent on mutilating themselves be given clean blades, bandages and "how-to" advice so they can cut themselves more safely.

The proposal for "safe" self-harm will be debated in April at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Congress and is expected to prove controversial.

Current practice mirrors what most people expect of the medical profession – stopping anyone from harming himself and removing any sharp objects that could be used to cut the skin...

...Research indicates self-harm is most common among girls aged 15 to 19, but rates are reported to be rising among men in their early twenties. For some, the condition continues for decades.

Jeff Jacoby points out the obvious: how come you don't see other religious organizations rioting in the streets when they're offended? It always seems to just be radical Muslims.

THE PROBLEM WITH HATE CRIMES
Jacob Robida, the murderer who walked into a gay bar in Massachusetts last Wednesday and shot a couple people and attacked them with a hatchet, has been tracked down by the police and killed.

Have you noticed how the press presents the whole episode? They don't say "Murderer gunned down" or "Killer no longer on the loose" as Neal Boortz pointed out. Writes Boortz" '...we get "Hate-Crime Suspect Dies in Gunbattle." So what's the problem?'

Boortz continues, "Hate crimes criminalize thought. If you walk into a straight bar and kill two people and attack others with a hatchet, then what's the difference if you do the same in a gay bar? Absolutely nothing. But had he lived, he would have been charged with a "hate crime." It could be argued that Jason Robida would have been tried for what he was thinking at the time he committed the crime (and received a tougher sentence), rather than for the crime itself... As things stand now, you can only be tried if your "hate" is translated into some sort of a criminal action against another person or against property. How big a leap would it be to punish you for the hate even if you don't commit a crime as a result of your feelings? How long before your hate becomes the crime? ...Wait until the question of whether or not you are a criminal rests on a definition of hate."
