IMHO=In My Humble Opinion VBG=Very Big Grin

This blog is devoted to topics that interest me and perhaps I'll post information that "the mainstream media" chooses to ignore or deemphasize. The point here is not to debate what I post, just consider it another point of view if you disagree with it, you know, be "open minded" and "tolerant."

Alps are warmest in 1,300 years
...so what? It just proves my point that the earth has been warmer in the past and that we're just coming out of the latest cooling cycle...
Tue Dec 5, VIENNA, Austria - Europe's Alpine region is going through its warmest period in 1,300 years, the head of an extensive climate study said Tuesday.

"We are currently experiencing the warmest period in the Alpine region in 1,300 years," Reinhard Boehm, a climatologist at Austria's Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics said...

...Boehm said the current warm period in the Alpine region began in the 1980s, noting that a similar warming occurred in the 10th and 12th centuries...

...Humans first had an impact on the global climate in the 1950s, Boehm said...
(1300 years ago makes it 706 AD. So how did humans cause the warm temps prior to that? How did humans cause the "similar warming" in the 10th and 12th centuries?) http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061205/ap_on_sc/austria_warming_in_alps

Fearful employers ban 'offensive' Christmas decorations
The Daily Mail (UK) 12/5/06 England ...A survey of 2,300 employers found that 74 per cent had banned decorations because they were worried about offending other faiths…

…Peter Done, managing director of Peninsula, said ..."Although employers who are enforcing the ban are skeptical and dismayed by this trend, they feel that they have little choice in the matter due to the threat of litigation; as they have to protect themselves, their reputation and their livelihood."

What Christmas Sales Slump?
Pat Boone Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006
...I was asked by Neil Cavuto to join a panel on his show this week, to discuss "Black Friday," the day after Thanksgiving known for its voracious shoppers, and the sudden fear expressed by much of the media that Christmas sales might be lower than expected, mainly because Wal-Mart reported same-store retail sales 0.1 percent lower than projected!

The headline in USA Today was "Markets Pull Back on Fears of Slump." And the article began, "U.S. stocks dropped the most in more than four months Monday after a falling dollar and a 'sales slump' at Wal-Mart heightened concern that an economic slowdown will curb holiday spending."

Sales slump? At 0.1 percent less than projected giant sales? I asked Neil why he wanted me on the show, since I'm not a noted economist. He responded, "I want somebody that will have something positive to say ..."

… I pointed out that WalMart's online sales were up a reported 42 percent, so of course that might diminish store sales somewhat, but that online and store sales figured together added up to a whopping increase over previous years and any published projections! What "slump"? And then USA Today reported that "Consumers spend 19 percent more over the holiday weekend"!

Further, they reported "The unemployment rate was the lowest in five and a half years; employers are raising wages and increasing workers' hours.
In October, average weekly earnings after adjusting for inflation rose
1.7 percent, the second consecutive monthly gain and the biggest increase in more than a decade"! What "slump" is anybody talking about?

Who gives to charity?
By John Stossel
December 6, 2006
Americans are pretty generous. …What distinguishes those who give from those who don't? It turns out there are many myths about that.

To test them, ABC's "20/20" went to Sioux Falls, S.D., and San Francisco. We asked the Salvation Army to set up buckets at their busiest locations in both cities. Which bucket would get more money?

Mortgage demand rises as rates fall, refinancing surges 8.1%
Mortgage applications rose sharply last week, as the lowest interest rates in more than a year prompted a surge in demand for refinancing, an industry trade group said Wednesday...

...Demand for home purchase loans was also robust…The MBA's seasonally adjusted purchase index, widely considered a timely gauge of U.S. home sales, rose 4.9% to 426.6, highest since May...

Teen Murderer Says Jail Is Too Hard, Appeals Sentence
December 6, 2006 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- One of the teenagers responsible for beating a Holly Hill homeless man to death asked a judge to reduce his 22-year prison sentence Monday. Warren Messner and three other teens pled guilty to killing the man because they were bored, but Messner said prison is too hard...

...Messner is a big boy. He was 15 at the time he was brought into the woods to see the homeless man his friends had been beating. Even at that young age, he outweighed the victim, Michael Roberts, by 200 pounds when he jumped on his chest, crushing his ribcage. Roberts died.

"Did you feel bad when you are doing it?" Messner was asked during questioning.

"Not really, no," he replied...

Messner and his attorney said he has already learned his lesson and is ready to go home to help others.

"I want to be an inspirational speaker for troubled teens," he said Monday.

Messner got the lightest sentence of the four boys... [his] mother said it's unfair, ..."He's not getting the mental health, the schooling. He's not getting anything, anything but locked in a cell all day long."

The judge and the state both argued that being deprived services and being locked away is precisely the point of prison...

Gore Picks Pals Over Cape Wind
Boston Globe
27 APR 2006 (last April)
Given his commitment to the environment, you'd think Al Gore would be a big booster of Cape Wind. Think again. Seems the former VP values his friendship with the Kennedys even more than the megawatts of clean, renewable energy the wind farm would yield. ''Based on what I know, I'm for it, but I also respect the opponents -- Bobby Kennedy Jr. is a friend of mine," Gore said... ...Pressed by the invite-only crowd at Loews Boston Common to use his influence to push the project, Gore copped out: ''I didn't come to pick a fight." ...The Tennessean also took a shot at MIT prof Richard Lindzen, who's questioned the science behind global warming. ''His views are wrong," said Gore. ''That's the most charitable I can be."

Probes dismiss imams' racism claim
December 6, 2006 Three parallel investigations into the removal of six imams from a US Airways flight last month have so far concluded that the airline acted properly, that the imams' claims they were merely praying and their eviction was racially inspired are without foundation.

An internal investigation by the airline found that air and ground crews "acted correctly" when they requested that the Muslim men be removed from a Minneapolis-to-Phoenix flight on Nov. 20...

...The Air Carrier Security Committee of the Air Line Pilots Association investigated the incident and said, "The crew's actions were strictly in compliance with procedures and demonstrated overall good judgment in the care and concern for their passengers, fellow crew members, and the company."

... The suspicious behavior cited in the report included "changing seats, stating anti-war, anti U.S.-Iraq involvement, negative comments concerning the president of the United States." The report noted that "two of the passengers requesting seat-belt extensions when their body size did not appear to warrant their use."

On a Wing and a Prayer

Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Those are the words that started it all. Six bearded imams are said to have shouted them out while offering evening prayers as they and 141 other passengers waited at the gate for their flight out of Minneapolis International Airport. It was three days before Thanksgiving. Allahu Akbar: God is great.

Initial media reports of the incident did not include the disturbing details about what happened after they boarded US Airways flight 300, but the story quickly went national with provocative headlines: "Six Muslims Ejected from US Air Flight for Praying." Yes, they were praying--but let's be clear about this. The very last human sound on the cockpit voice recorder of United flight 93 before it screamed into the ground at 580 miles per hour is the sound of male voices shouting "Allahu Akbar" in a moment of religious ecstasy...

Steve Forbes: Tax Cuts Saved U.S. Economy
12-5-06 When Steve Forbes speaks about money, people listen...he editor in chief of the nation's leading business magazine...

President Bush, for instance, has fully embraced the view that tax cuts stimulate the economy. Bush proposed the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, which Congress passed. It will cut taxes by an estimated $1.3 trillion by 2010. Another bill in 2003 cut taxes a further $60 billion a year, focusing on dividends and capital gains taxes.

So far, the effects have been clear. In the first 33 months after Bush signed the 2003 tax bill, the American economy increased by 20 percent and nearly 5.3 million new jobs were created.

Over the first half of this year, our economy grew at a 4.1 percent annual rate, faster than any other major industrialized nation, and tax receipts actually rose $206 billion in the first nine months of this fiscal year...

I would assume the renters would benefit from lower rent and so are not entitled to the taxes paid. How much do renters kick in when their refrigerator or if roof needs repairing?
Corzine vows to share property tax aid with renters and the poor
December 06, 2006 Renters earning less than $50,000 will share in the same property tax relief package homeowners are expected to get in the next year, Gov. Jon Corzine said yesterday.

Corzine, speaking at an anti-poverty forum, also said he would support expanding the state rental assistance program and consider limiting how often affluent communities may sell off their legal obligations to build affordable housing in cities strapped for cash. Without rental subsidies and more housing opportunities in suburbs closer to jobs, thousands of people will continue to struggle, he said.
