PHILADELPHIA — A Christian legal group has sued a school district on behalf of a 10-year-old boy who claims his rights to religion and free speech were violated when he was not allowed to wear a Jesus costume during Halloween activities...

...The principal, Patricia Whitmire, told the boy's mother that the costume violated a policy prohibiting the promotion of religion, according to the lawsuit...

Though the boy's costume was rejected because of its religious nature, the principal allowed other students to dress up as witches and devils, according to the lawsuit, which identified the boy only by his initials...

The boy and his mother are Christians who object to the pagan elements of Halloween, but the mother did not want the boy isolated for refusing to wear a costume, according to the lawsuit.

US deficit is shrinking

Despite the ongoing costs of US military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, the outlook for the federal budget has grown substantially brighter.

Tax revenues are rising much faster than spending, according to Treasury Department numbers released last week. The recent trend is strong enough that, were it to continue, the budget could move into surplus in barely a year, one economist calculates...

...The shift reflects a strong economy, with higher incomes and corporate profits generating a bigger flow of tax revenue. In turn, the Treasury's progress could help the economy by buoying investor confidence in the nation's fiscal position...

The Incredible Shrinking Deficit

Rising tax receipts are cutting the deficit.

...the federal government will be spending $244 billion more than it collects in 2007 (or about 1.8 percent of gross domestic product) and $239 billion in 2008 (or 1.6 percent of GDP). Still, those are hardly scary numbers for a $13.5 trillion economy. "The magnitude of the current deficit is nothing to be concerned about," says Jared Bernstein, an economist at the liberal Economic Policy Institute...

...According to the proposal, the U.S. government would run a $61 billion surplus in 2012, though the projected deficits in 2010 ($94.4 billion) and 2011 ($53.8 billion) would be so small relative to the size of a projected $18 trillion economy-0.6 percent and 0.3 percent of gross domestic product-as to be financially insignificant. (And yes, bean counters of America, these numbers do assume that Social Security surpluses are commingled with the rest of tax revenues.)

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office also shows the budget moving into balance by 2012...

A new report on climate over the world's southernmost continent shows that temperatures during the late 20th century did not climb as had been predicted by many global climate models...

Lawmaker Wants Helmets For Young Sledders

BOSTON -- If one lawmaker has his way, children in Massachusetts will have to put on helmets to go sledding.

State Sen. Steven Panagiotakos said he plans to file a bill to require children under 13 to wear helmets while sledding...

He said most kids already have bicycle helmets, and those could be used for sledding as well.

The proposal follows a rash of weather-related injuries during last week's snow and ice storm.

Well, in order to ensure that every posible accident is mitigated why not require children to wear the helmits 24 hours a day until their 18th birthday. Better yet, make it until their 21st birthday!

Environmental expert decries 'hypocrisy' of Gore, greens

A climate change expert says Al Gore and other proponents of catastrophic manmade global warming are not only pushing flawed science, but also demonstrating hypocrisy while pushing their cause against what they consider a dire threat...

Dennis Avery, an expert on environmental issues at the Hudson Institute, says he …cannot agree with the explanation that the warming prior to 1940 was caused by human-emitted carbon dioxide (CO2), because 80 percent of the CO2 was emitted after that. "So if we take away 0.5 degrees of the warming from before 1940 and give human-emitted CO2 half of the net warming since 1940, that comes to 0.15 degrees ... over a 150 years," he says -- noting that occurred during a period "when the laws of physics say each additional unit of CO2 will have less forcing power than the one before it."

Avery is co-author of the book Unstoppable Global Warming Every 1,500 Years. Avery claims over the last 20 years, he and co-author Dr. Fred Singer have documented globally from dozens of different proxies a "natural solar-driven moderate" 1,500-year climate cycle. He says he is "greatly despaired," however, that no one is telling the public about it…

More Americans killed by illegal aliens than Iraq war, study says

Illegal aliens are killing more Americans than the Iraq war, says a new report from Family Security Matters that estimates some 2,158 murders are committed every year by illegal aliens in the U.S. The group says that number is more than 15 percent of all the murders reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the U.S. and about three times the representation of illegal aliens in the general population.

Mike Cutler, a former senior special agent with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (the former INS), is a fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies and an advisor to Family Security Matters (FSM). He says the high number of Americans being killed by illegal aliens is just part of the collateral damage that comes with tolerating illegal immigration...

...The report from FSM estimates that the 267,000 illegal aliens currently incarcerated in the nation are responsible for nearly 1,300,000 crimes, ranging from drug arrests to rape and murder. Such statistics, Cutler contends, debunk the claim that illegal immigration is a victimless crime...

John Murtha: Caving In to Arabs Since 1980

Rumored ex-Marine John Murtha, Democrat congressman from Pennsylvania, has become the darling of the cut-and-run crowd for trying to place absurd restrictions on our troops, amounting to withdrawal from Iraq. Were Arab sheiks whispering into his ear?

In case you missed the video on "I Love the '80s," Rep. Murtha was caught on tape negotiating bribes with Arab sheiks during the FBI's Abscam investigation in 1980. The Abscam investigation was conducted by Jimmy Carter's Justice Department, not right-wing Republicans.

On tape, Murtha told the undercover FBI agent: "When I make a f***in' deal I want to make sure that I know exactly what I'm doing and ... what I'm sayin' is, a few investments in my district ..."

It is a profound and shocking fact that Murtha even showed up at this meeting, knowing he was going to be negotiating bribe money with Arabs.

Murtha added that he wanted the investment in his district to look like it was done... "legitimately ... when I say legitimately, I'm talking about so these bastards up here can't say to me ... 'Jesus Christ, ah, this happened,' then he (someone else), in order to get immunity so he doesn't go to jail, he starts talking and fingering people and then the son of a bitch all falls apart."
