This blog is devoted to topics that interest me and perhaps I'll post information that "the mainstream media" chooses to ignore or deemphasize. The point here is not to debate what I post, just consider it another point of view if you disagree with it, you know, be "open minded" and "tolerant."

'SUPER ASPIRIN' HEART RX
September 5, 2005 Giving heart-attack patients a dose of "super aspirin" before rather than during a procedure to restore blood flow to the heart could save tens of thousands of lives a year, new research suggests….In a major international study presented yesterday at a meeting here of the European Society of Cardiology, scientists found that giving heart attack victims the drug Plavix when they arrive at the emergency room almost halved the risk of a stroke, a repeated heart attack or death within the first month after angioplasty.

Angioplasty, a procedure where doctors thread a needle through the blood vessels and implant a tiny flexible mesh tube to prop open narrowed or clogged arteries, is performed on about 2 million people worldwide every year…Patients during this procedure are routinely given Plavix, often called "super aspirin" because it prevents blood clots in a similar way to aspirin but has a higher potency, because inflating the mesh tube inside the blood vessels disturbs the lining of the artery and attracts clots. …However, in the study of 1,863 heart attack patients, led by Dr. Marc Sabatine from the Harvard University-affiliated Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, 6.3 percent of the people who got 300 milligrams of Plavix at the time of their angioplasty had a heart attack or stroke or died from heart complications during the subsequent month. However, only 3.6 percent of those who got the drug several hours beforehand went on to suffer those problems.

Floodwaters recede faster than expected
9/11/05 …Waterlogged southern Louisiana yesterday showed signs of drying out faster than expected as local officials began to clean up the mess…Dan Hitchings, an official with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, flew over New Orleans yesterday and said he was "astounded at how much more land area is exposed - is dry - than it was before." Some early estimates had said floodwaters would remain in parts of the region as long as 80 days…The latest timetables call for parts of New Orleans to be pumped dry by Oct. 2, and other areas by Oct. 8 or Oct. 18. That is based on the number of permanent and temporary pumps the Corps has running, and it is contingent on rainfall's not exceeding historical averages in coming weeks.

What a joke
9/10/2005 …Former President Bill Clinton called in to the BET telethon to express support and was asked by co-host Steve Harvey what his administration would have done differently if it were in power during the hurricane. Clinton refrained from criticizing Bush, but talked about the importance he placed on the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
"We always thought faster was better than slower," Clinton said….

(hmmm. nothing like rewriting or ignoring history. The appropriate answer would have been something along the line, “The government is working hard and this is neither the time nor place for this discussion.")

Blacks fault lack of local leadership
…Mayor Nagin has blamed everyone else except himself," said the Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, founder and president of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny…"The mayor failed in his duty to evacuate and protect the people of New Orleans. ... The truth is, black people died not because of President Bush or racism, they died because of their unhealthy dependence on the government and the incompetence of Mayor Ray Nagin and Governor Kathleen Blanco," he said...

Dem Senate Confirmed Michael Brown
9/10/2005 [FEMA’s]…Brown got glowing reviews from some of his new critics, when he was confirmed by the Senate in 2002. "Not only was Brown confirmed," noted York. "But he was apparently confirmed by a unanimous voice vote -- when the Senate was controlled by Democrats. . . . "The whole affair, including tributes from Brown's home-state senators, apparently lasted less then an hour, and ended with [Sen. Joe] Lieberman saying, 'Mr. Brown, I thank you very much. I will certainly support your nomination. I will do my best to move it through the committee as soon as possible so we can have you fully and legally at work in your new position.'" The hearing was for Brown's nomination as FEMA deputy director - but apparently Brown didn't have to be re-confirmed when he became director.

British prosperity on par with the poorest US states.
11 September 2005 …GREAT BRITAIN's steady slide down the world prosperity league tables has left it on a par with the poorest American states and cities, according to new research by the US Statistics Bureau, an official federal agency. Its findings will be seen as a fresh blow to Chancellor Gordon Brown's claim that his model for the British economy is succeeding and comes as 170 national leaders meet in New York this week to discuss poverty... Britain would be considered the fifth-poorest state in the United States and the average citizen of central London earns significantly less than his counterparts in comparatively deprived American cities such as Detroit and New Orleans, the research reveals. While the worst US poverty remains more acute than the worst British poverty, partly because of more generous welfare provision in Britain, those on the second-lowest rung of the prosperity ladder are far better-off than their British counterparts - and would be considered middle class in the UK.
The complete article is interesting and I recommend you follow the link and read it all.
I think the last sentance in the thread above is very telling. . ."those on the second-lowest rung of the prosperity ladder are far better-off than their British counterparts - and would be considered middle class in the UK.”
