California professionals dine out of Dumpsters
Nov. 29, 2006 - Cynthia Powell and Stephen Vajda are unabashed Dumpster divers who get much of their weekly food from garbage cans.
The two educated Berkeley, Calif., professionals - who are not hungry or otherwise in need - say they are motivated by a growing conservation movement with a mantra that wasting resources, especially food, is shameful.
Powell and Vajda estimate they can save up to $100 a week by dining on day-old bread, vegetables and sometimes chocolate from commercial garbage cans.
The two estimated they know at least a half dozen like-minded people in Berkeley who regularly dine out - way out.
"I'm not hungry," said Powell. "I do it because it's good food, it's free and it's conservation."
...Brian Mathews, a senior program manager at StopWaste.org, a voter-mandated special district that promotes "environmentally sound solid waste management and resource conservation" said businesses in Berkeley threw away 8.8 million pounds of food in 2000, the latest year for which numbers are available...
http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/news/nation/16126463.htm
(But we can't give the food to the needy before it gets to the dumpsters because of other do-gooders as you'll recall in an article I sent out last week that said churches or individuals can't pass out sandwiches or cookies to the homeless unless it's first been processed in state approved kitchens or risk being fined and shut down...)
Christians Sue University for Fraternity Recognition
December 07, 2006 - Christian lawyers have filed a federal lawsuit against the University of Georgia (UGA) after school officials refused to officially recognize a Christian fraternity.
The lawyers pointed out that the university permits political party-affiliated groups to have a party membership requirement but won't allow a Christian group to require that its members be Christians...
...The fraternity was recognized by the university during the 2005-2006 academic year, but recognition was revoked in 2006 because of the group's requirement that members profess Christian beliefs...
...Lawyers from the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) and the Christian Legal Society (CLS), the groups suing the school on behalf of the students, say UGA's policy violates students' First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and assembly...
...Tracey said the university "deprives Christian student groups of this right when they force them to open their membership and leadership to students who disagree with their Christian beliefs."
"The university allows the Young Democrats to require its officers and members to be Democrats," Tracey said. "Why is it then that the university is telling Christian groups that they cannot require their officers and members to be Christians."

4 -year-old Suspended For Improperly Touching Teacher, Gets Record
Dec 7, 2006 - A four-year-old hugged his teachers aide and was put into in-school suspension, according to the father. But La Vega school administrators have a different story.
Damarcus Blackwell's four-year-old son was lining-up to get on the bus after school last month, when he was accused of rubbing his face in the chest of a female employee.
The prinicipal of La Vega Primary School sent a letter to the Blackwells that said the pre-kindergartener demonstrated "inappropriate physical behavior interpreted as sexual contact and/or sexual harassment."
Blackwell says it's ridiculous that the aide would misread a hug from a four-year-old. Blackwell wrote to administrators demanding that the whole incident be expunged from his son's academic file because his son is too young to know what it means to act sexually...
...Blackwell got a response from the La Vega administration..."your request for ...removal of all paperwork regarding this incident is denied." Now the young student's file will refer to the incident as "inappropriate physical contact."
La Vega I.S.D. administrators told News Channel 25 they couldn't comment on this case because of student privacy issues.

GOP's Hastert at war with Democrat over 'Christmas' tree Sen. Patty Murray avoids C-word, opts for 'holiday' at national lighting ceremony
December 7, 2006
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., called this a "holiday tree" while House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., referred to it as a "Christmas tree" during last night's 43rd annual lighting of the "U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree."
…In 2005, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., instructed federal officials to refer to it as the "Capitol Christmas Tree," after having been called the "Capitol Holiday Tree" since the 1990s...
...at last night's lighting ceremony for the 65-foot Pacific Silver Fir, the Democrat senator from the tree's home state of Washington never used the word "Christmas" in her speech to the assembled crowd, opting instead for the term "holiday tree" twice.
"It is so wonderful and such an honor to be here tonight in the nation's capital as we light what we all believe from the other end of the country is the best holiday tree ever," said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash...
...Murray was immediately followed by a performance by the National Presbyterian School Chorus, which sang "O Christmas Tree."
...When it finally came to the actual lighting of the decorations, House Speaker Hastert (R) used the word "Christmas" at least a dozen times, and referred to the tree itself exclusively as a "Christmas tree."

Terrorists rejoicing over new Iraq 'plan'
December 6, 2006 -JERUSALEM - A high level U.S. commission's recommendations for an eventual withdrawal from Iraq and for dialogue with Iran and Syria proves "Islamic resistance" works and America will ultimately be defeated, according to senior terrorist leaders interviewed by WND...
..."The report proves that this is the era of Islam and of jihad," said Abu Ayman, a senior leader of Islamic Jihad in the northern West Bank town of Jenin. The Islamic Jihad terror group is responsible for every suicide bombing in Israel during the past two years...
..."It is not just a simple victory. It is a great one. The big superpower of the world is defeated by a small group of mujahedeen (fighters). Did you see the mujahedeens' clothes and weapons in comparison with the huge individual military arsenal and supply that was carrying every American soldier?" exclaimed Abu Abdullah, who is considered one of the most important operational members of Hamas' Izzedine al-Qassam Martyrs Brigades, Hamas' declared "resistance" department...

U.S. hurricane aid fraud likely tops $1 bln: report
Dec 6, 2006 Fraud involving payments supposed to help victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita likely exceeds earlier estimates of $1 billion and only a tiny fraction of the money has been recovered, according to a U.S. government report released on Wednesday.
A February estimate that improper payments could be $1 billion "is likely understated," the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, said in the report to the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee...

Senate Debates Global Warming, CNN Anchor Snoozes
December 6, 2006 As already noted here on NewsBusters, the Senate held a hearing today examining the role of the media in promoting climate alarmism...
...Dr. David Deming, a geophysicist from the University of Oklahoma recounted an experience he had with an NPR reporter who hung up on him after he declined to say that he thought global temperature increases were human-caused...
...CNN "American Morning" anchor Miles O'Brien who fell asleep during the discussion, according to several witnesses. HERE COMES A GOOD DOSE OF WEALTH ENVY
The Financial Times has published a story about who holds what portion of the world's assets. From this report we learn that the richest 2% hold one-half of the world's assets.
First of all, this number is flawed because the researchers have failed to include governments as asset-holders. In the United States, for instance, the federal government is the largest landowner ... by a huge margin. Factor in government and you'll find that the world's richest 2% hold far less than one-half of the world's assets.
But let's deal with the Financial Times story, and how it was written. Look at the first sentence:
"Personal wealth is distributed so unevenly across the world that the richest two per cent of adults own more than 50 per cent of the worlds assets while the poorest half hold 1 per cent of wealth."
What's wrong with that sentence? ... you got it. Personal wealth is not "distributed." It is earned. Not once in the entire Financial Times story will you see the word "earned."
…Chris Giles, the Financial Times economics editor in London says that "if all of the world's wealth was distributed evenly, each person would have $20,500 of assets to use." What Chris Giles doesn't tell you is that if this redistribution of wealth was accomplished, those who have little now will take their $20,500 and squander it on booze, cigarettes, gambling and other trivial pursuits, while those who now hold most of the wealth would use their $20,500 stake to invest and rebuild their wealth. Give it a couple of years, and without government interference in the free market most of the wealth would be right back in the hands who hold it now…~Neal Boortz
The Gore Effect
As it's been suggested before, the only sure fire way to reduce global warming is to put a cork in Al Gore.
...Strangely, wherever Mr. Gore travels about the world sounding the alarm it suddenly turns bone chilling cold and mounds of snow pile up.
But not to worry, say his supporters who explain that, those bitter cold fronts are the result of guess what . . . global warming! It would appear that the warmer the earth gets, the colder it gets. If it gets any warmer we'll all freeze to death.
Writing in Australia's on Nov. 17 Herald Sun, Andrew Bolt reported on the Gore phenomena writing that when Al Gore arrived in Australia last month to warn about global warming, Victoria got snow in November! (remember in Australia when it's summer here it's winter there, and vice versa...)
"Call it the Gore Effect - the uncanny ability of the world's most famous global warming alarmist to cool any place he tours . . . this has happened to the former U.S. vice-president and narrator of "An Inconvenient Truth" rather a lot.
"It was first noticed in Boston in 2004, when Gore was due to give a big speech in Boston on the imminent danger of the world frying. Bingo! The city had its coldest temperatures in almost 50 years. Same story with his speech that year in New York - delivered in near-record low temperatures.
"Or look over at New Zealand, which has just finished hosting another Gore tour . . . the place was just emerging from one of its wettest and coldest winters on record . . . and now the local papers report: "An unusually cold October has left Southland dairy farmers struggling."
...I don't know where Al Gore was a couple of days ago when much of the U.S. endured late-winter type temperatures and record breaking early snow falls...

A Skeptic’s Guide to Debunking Global Warming Alarmism. Hot & Cold Media Spin Cycle: A Challenge To Journalists who Cover Global Warming.
Washington D.C. - Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the outgoing Chairman of Environment & Public Works Committee, is pleased to announce the public release of the Senate Committee published booklet entitled “A Skeptic’s Guide to Debunking Global Warming Alarmism. Hot & Cold Media Spin Cycle: A Challenge To Journalists who Cover Global Warming.”
Download the guide at: http://epw.senate.gov/repwhitepapers/6341044%20Hot%20&%20Cold%20Media.pdf
The book, which features web links to all supporting documentation, also serves as a handbook to identify the major players in media bias when it comes to poor climate science reporting. The guide presents a reporter’s virtual who’s-who’s of embarrassing and one-sided media coverage, with a focus on such reporters as CBS News “60 Minutes” Scott Pelley, ABC News reporter Bill Blakemore, CNN’s Miles O’Brien, and former NBC Newsman Tom Brokaw.
Senator Inhofe’s “Skeptic’s Guide” also includes hard hitting critiques of the New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Associated Press, Reuters, the LA Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the Washington Post.
Senator Inhofe has challenged the media in a series of speeches and hearings to stop the unfounded hype.
“The American people are fed up with media for promoting the idea that former Vice President Al Gore represents the scientific “consensus” that SUV’s and the modern American way of life have somehow created a 'climate emergency' that only United Nations bureaucrats and wealthy Hollywood liberals can solve,” Senator Inhofe said in October.
Skepticism that human C02 emissions are creating a “climate catastrophe” has grown in recent times. In September, renowned French geophysicists and Socialist Party member Claude Allegre, converted from a believer in manmade catastrophic global warming to a climate skeptic. This latest defector from the global warming camp caps a year in which numerous scientific studies have bolstered the claims of climate skeptics.
Scientific studies that debunk the dire predictions of human-caused global warming have continued to accumulate and many believe the new science is shattering the media-promoted scientific “consensus” on climate alarmism. See: (http://epw.senate.gov/pressitem.cfm?party=rep&id=264777)
